Official information Request:
Dear Sophie,
Thank you for your request for official information, received on 10 June 2019 by way of transfer from the
Ministry of Health. This response is coming from the Mental Health, Addictions & Intellectual Disability
Service (MHAIDS 3DHB).
Question:
As of March 2019, how many people under 24 are on a waiting list to access services at the Wellington and
Kapiti district mental health and addictions service?
Response:
We are unable to capture the data requested due to the complexities and types of individual referrals. We
can, however, provide information about figures for active referrals for people aged under 24.
Scenarios of clients recorded as active referrals include:
Liaison referrals where advice and consultation is sought from other medical professionals, but the
client concerned will not meet with mental health services.
Child & Youth referrals where the focus of the treatment is on working with family/whānau
Referrals being triaged through our point of entry services (e.g. Te Haika and Court Liaison). At this
time the referrals may not fulfil criteria for a face to face appointment with mental health services,
or further information may be required to complete a triage process.
MHAIDS does not operate a” waiting list”. If a referral is accepted then the person is booked onto the next
available “choice” appointment at the time. As at 1 March 2019, the mean length of time referrals had been
open was 33 days for people under 24.
We trust the information we have provided meets your needs however you have the right, by way of
complaint under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act 1982 to the Office of the Ombudsman, to seek
an investigation and review of our refusal to disclose information to you as set out above. Further
information about making a complaint can be found at

complaint. Regards,
Nigel Fairley General Manager
