I am writing to you in response to your request dated 7 June 2019, which was transferred to New Zealand Police on 14 June 2019. You asked: Please provide me the following details. 1) number of firearms seized since March 15th 2019. 2) the number of people who have had firearms seized. 3) the number of people who have had firearms seized who have a firearms license. 4) number of firearms seized that are air rifles 5) number of firearms seized that are centre fire 6) number of firearms seized that are rimfire 7) number of firearms seized that are shotguns.
Between 15 March and 22 July 2019, New Zealand Police seized 690 firearms under the provisions of section 6 or 18 of the Search and Surveillance Act 2012.
There were 493 members of the public involved in these seizures. Of these 493 people, 77 were recorded as having a firearms licence at the time of firearms seizure.
Of the 690 firearms seized, 82 were air rifles and 165 were shotguns (both cut down and full length).
Information on whether the firearm is rimfire or centre fire is not recorded in the Firearms Search and Seizure database.
