Welcome
The Chancellor welcomed Associate Professor P A Cragg, the Acting
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) to the meeting.
Part 1: Open Committee
1. Minutes
Part 1 of the Minutes of the meeting of the Council held on
9 April 2019 was confirmed.
2. Disclosure of Interest and Register of Interests
The Council received the current Register of Interests for members of the
University of Otago Council. There were no further updates or disclosures
by a member of Council for any items on this agenda.
3. Communications from the Senate
The Council received Communications from the Senate, which met on 17
April 2019, and

recommendations relating to:

4. Annual Accounts 2018
The Council
RATIFIED
the adoption of the Annual Accounts for 2018 and the sign-off of the
Statement of Responsibility.
5. Financial Review
The Council received the Financial Review Part 1 for the March 2019
period.
6. Traffic and Parking Regulations 2019
The Council received a memorandum from the Chief Operating Officer,
the Director of Property Services and the Registrar & Secretary to the
Council, dated 6 May 2019, and
APPROVED
the Traffic and Parking Regulations 2019, with minor amendments as
discussed, and the revocation of the Traffic and Parking Regulations 2014,
effective 14 May 2019.
The Chief Operating Officer commented on plans for increasing awareness
around the changes, including rolling out a “Walk your Wheels” campaign.
7. University of Otago Economic Impact Report 2018
The Council received the University of Otago Economic Impact Report
2018, prepared by the Office of Planning and Funding.
The Director of Strategy, Analytics and Reporting commented on the
methodology used in the report which has been produced for the past two
decades and the headline results for 2018. These included exceeding, for
the first time, $1 billion of direct expenditure for Dunedin and $2 billion of
total expenditure within New Zealand. Over 90% of impact is in the
Dunedin economy with student expenditure contributing approximately
35% of this.
8. 150th Anniversary Celebrations
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement, commented on the
upcoming Queen’s Birthday weekend celebratory events and highlighted a
variety of further events planned for later in the year, including the 30th
anniversary celebrations of the University’s Māori Centre.
9. Vice-Chancellor’s Business
The Council received a report from the Vice-Chancellor, dated 7 May
2019. The report included comment on topical issues, updates from
divisions, events and speaking engagements, and awards received by
students and staff.
The Vice-Chancellor reported on two recent alumni functions held in
Australia. She and the Chancellor hosted a function in Sydney on 7 May,
attended by around 80 alumni. On 9 May the Vice-Chancellor hosted 50
guests at an alumni function in Melbourne.
10. Chancellor’s Business
The Chancellor commented on recent events he has attended, including the
Auckland and Sydney alumni events, Inaugural Professorial Lectures and
the Arts Fellows’ Welcome.
11. Exclusion of the Public
The Council
APPROVED
a motion, under Section 48 of the Local Government Official Information
and Meetings Act 1987, that the public be excluded from the remaining
parts of the proceedings of the meeting as set out in detail in the Agenda.
