Dear Mr Muller
Thank you for your email of 12 August 2019 regarding the use of adhesive registration plates. Your
email has been referred to me for response as the matters you raise fall within my responsibilities as
Senior Manager Customer Services.
Although the Land Transport (Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2011 grant the NZ
Transport Agency the ability to issue front registration plates in the form of an adhesive label, this is a
discretionary power that is not currently in use. Despite reasonable effort the Transport Agency has
been unable to source a suitable adhesive material which meets the necessary reflectivity and security
standards.
While I understand the appeal of an adhesive registration plate, only registration plates which have been
issued by the Transport Agency or one of our agents are acceptable. Vehicle owners who take it upon
themselves to source an alternative product are at risk of being fined by enforcement agencies such as
NZ Police.
If you would like to discuss this matter further with the Transport Agency, you are welcome to contact
Sam Russell, Customer Advisor – Ministerials, by email to [email address] or on 0800 108
809.
Yours sincerely
Michelle Charlton
