[FYI request #11087 email]
Dear Paula
Thank you for your request on 29 August 2019 to the Ministry of Education for the following
information:
1. How many schools are using diesel to heat them.
2. How many schools are using coal to heat them.
3. Please provide a list of the schools in New Zealand that are using coal or diesel as
a source of heating.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The Ministry does not hold up to date information about the fuel source of each individual
school, as schools make their own energy choices.
I am refusing your request under section 18(g) of the Act, as the information you have
requested is not held by the Ministry, and view it unreasonable to transfer this request to
individual schools.
We recommend to schools that they do not install new coal boilers and to seek an alternative
as they come to the end of their economic life. Our guidance for schools is set out in the
Designing Quality Learning Spaces (DQLS):

transport/projects-and-design/design/design-standards/energy-design/.
Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to review this
decision. You can do this by writing to
[email address] or Office of the
Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.
Yours sincerely
