Dear Patrick
Official information request for information on the ownership of the Linwood
Locomotive Depot
I refer to your official information request dated 2 September 2019, asking;
Please advise if any of the former Linwood Locomotive Depot land remains in KiwiRail
ownership.
Historically this has included several different areas of land bounded by Wilsons Road,
Ensors Road and the Main South Line corridor. These are as follows:
1. Land facing onto Ensors Road (former steam and electric locomotive sheds) some of
which has been occupied by Department of Corrections
2. Land accessed from Ensors Road which formerly had an entrance way from Laurence
Street and contains the former locomotive depot amenities buildings. It's understood KiwiRail
currently occupies these buildings.
3. Land which partly fronts onto Ensors Road and partly onto Wilsons Road. This site has
contained a number of facilities including locomotive and railcar sheds at the Ensors Road
end, and heading back towards Wilsons Road it used to contain turntables, coaling watering
for steam engines and other servicing functions as well as storage sidings. This area is now
almost all occupied by Fulton Hogans depot except for a small part accessed off Wilsons
Road apparently still used by KiwiRail.
