Dear Kelly
Official information request – Graduate Research scholarships
I refer to your official information requests dated 1 March 2020 as follows:
“What was the minimum GPA for successful academic merit scholarships for
the various graduate research Degrees?
Is there a list of candidates who received the scholarship monies?”
The minimum GPA for successful academic merit scholarships for graduate research degrees
varies. There are several academic merit scholarships available. Those requiring a minimum
GPA usually range between A- to B+. The calculation of the minimum GPA also varies
depending on the scholarship. For example, the calculation could be on the minimum GPA of
an applicant’s tertiary studies, of their last two semesters of study, of their most recent 240 points
of study, or of their postgraduate study.
As you are aware, for some scholarships, other discretionary factors are considered. For
example, financial hardship, research proposals, and/or externally funded scholarships, which
are decided and awarded by the funder.
As communicated in our previous correspondence, the University does not publish lists of
scholarship recipients, given such is personal information. The University will not be providing
you with a list of candidates who received scholarship monies.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or free
phone 0800 802 602.
Yours faithfully
Duanna Fowler
Director, Office of the Vice Chancellor
