Dear NZ Paranormal Investigators et al
Your Official Information Act request 19/20-0242
I write regarding your Official Information Act (the Act) request, which was received by the
Department of Internal Affairs (the Department) on 16 September 2019.
You have requested:
1. All information that you hold about potential paranormal/supernatural/haunting
related occurrences in this building and its surrounds. This includes anything that your
staff have perceived or suspected may be of this nature even if DIA does not share
their perceptions. This includes any notes, records, meeting minutes or records,
communications to staff, concerns raised by staff and internal discussions such as on
intranets or DIA message boards.
2. Full information regarding any reports of unusual environmental observations
3. Hard data from your aircon temperature sensors, any electromagnetic sensory
equipment you may have and any and all other environmental monitoring
mechanisms that you have in place, going back to when you first moved into the
building in 2017. This needs to be broken down into absolute detail
4.
Information about any measures that you have taken, plan to take or are/have
considered taking to examine and/or alleviate a potential paranormal situation
Response to your request
We have checked our records for the building at 45 Pipitea Street, Wellington since we
occupied the building in 2017.
1.

On 8 July 2019 there was a post entitled
“So there is no easy way to ask this …
Ghosts?” on our Staff Intranet Forum. It is included as part of this response. We have
withheld the names and photographs of the staff members who posted under
s9(2)(a) of the Act to protect the privacy of natural persons. Note that the staff
member who posted a photograph is no longer working at the Department and the
link to the photograph is not active.
There is no other information held by the Department for this site in the time period
you specified.
2.
Full information regarding any reports of unusual environmental observations
We have not received any reports of unusual environmental observations.
3. Hard data from your aircon temperature sensors, any electromagnetic sensory
equipment you may have and any and all other environmental monitoring
mechanisms that you have in place, going back to when you first moved into the
building in 2017. This needs to be broken down into absolute detail
The Department does not collect data around air conditioning temperature sensors
for the building at 45 Pipitea St as these are landlord-controlled systems. There are
no other environmental monitoring mechanisms in place that the Department holds
for this site.
4.
Information about any measures that you have taken, plan to take or are/have
considered taking to examine and/or alleviate a potential paranormal situation
There is nothing in place to deal specifically with this issue. If it arose, we would work
through this like any other issue and liaise with the appropriate groups.
If you have any feedback or questions about the Department’s response, please let us know
at [email address]
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available

What I want to know is how these entities are getting into DIA buildings without identity cards
What are Security and Property doing about it?
If blessings are just an ask, then why even have them, we need ghost busters instead!

Spirits can get attached to places, people and things. Not necessarily in a negative way. In fact,
most of the time not in a negative way.
Blessings "ask" permission of the spirits they do not necessarily banish them. I would be interested
to hear the stories too. Happy to chat :)

I can confirm I have seen a spectre around level 13.
It stared at through me just long enough for me to take a quick photo.
It is errily clear, but not for the easily scared.
PM me if you would like to see for yourself.

Well, as you know we have the infamous lower level 1 ghost here at Archives Wellington.
You get on the lift at lower level 2, press to head up to one of the higher levels and the door closes.
As the lift starts to move the number on the floor counter inside the lift flickers and the doors open
on lower level 1, no one is there it is dark and you either stand there unsure of what to do or mash
the close door button before something gets in.
The doors close and then you continue to your desired floor.
If you are after something more personal and outside of work, flick me a message and we can have
a chat. I am sure I have a few stories I can share with you.

Cool. Auckland Archives doesn't seem to have any noticeable ghostly happenings. Who do you
think the Lower Level 1 Ghost is?

So it's like 2am after a long night.
Exhausted and sleep deprived I can almost see demons in the shadows.
I hear my door handle turn.
I start to panic thinking the devil has finally come to drag my arse to hell.
My brother walks in and asks if I'm keen for a maccas run.

As a serials cataloguer I've been going back and forth to various serials stack areas in the National
Library, including the basement, for many years. I've never experienced any spooky phenomena.

What are the rumours and where is the alledged haunting?
Working at Archives in Auckland doesn't feel spooky, but then it would've been blessed before
opening on its current site in 2007.
In saying that we have had belongings go missing and I joke that a ghost has taken them
