Dear Mr Benseman
I refer to your official information request of 17 September 2017 regarding 1080 in the
Murchison Mountains.
You asked:
Why is no 1080 poisoned food spread in the 50,000 hectare Special Takahē
Area in the Murchison Mountains.? Please send me reports which support
this decision.
The Department has focused on trapping as the primary form of predator control in
the Murchison Mountains - the entire 50,000 hectares Special Takahē Area is now
covered by a stoat trapping network. For this reason, predator control decisions have
centred around optimising trapping rather than considering other methods such as
1080, and we must therefore decline your request under section 18(e) of the OIA, as
the information does not exist.
The Department is continuing to test and refine the effectiveness of trapping in
support of wild takahē adult survival, and other methods of pest control have not been
ruled out should they prove necessary for takahē conservation in the future.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
If you wish to discuss this decision with us, please feel free to contact me at this email
address.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) and enclosed
documents may be published on the Department’s website.
Yours sincerely
