Dear Ms Roe,
Please find the following answers to your Official Information Act request of October 2019.
(W)ith respect to my application to MB ChB in 2010… (p)lease can the University supply for me what
they calculated my GPA to be (and disclose their algorithm) and also inform me what my ranking was
prior to interview?
I note that the information you have requested is personal information and I would normally consult
with you about receiving a response via a personal email rather than through the fyi site. However,
given that in this case there is no personal information to provide, I am responding through this
website.
Regarding admission to the MB ChB programme in 2010, what is now called the
Alternative category
was called the
Other category. GPA rankings were not recorded in the decision to interview
applicants in the
Other category. There was no calculation of GPA and therefore no algorithm nor
pre-interview ranking based on GPA in the assessment process.
Please can the University supply for me the lowest GPA of any person accepted to MB ChB program
who applied under 'Alternative' category, for that same year?
I take your question to expand upon your original question regarding the GPA rankings and
algorithm. Because GPA rankings were not used in the assessment process for the
Other category
the University of Otago does not hold this information. Applicants in the
Other or
Alternative
categories have a diverse range of backgrounds and experience and therefore GPA does not feature
in the assessment process in the same way it features in the
First Year Health Sciences and
Graduate
categories.
Yours sincerely,
