Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-003602
Thank you for your email of 3 February 2020, asking for the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Please provide information regarding the total cost of injuries covered by ACC that occurred on
School Campuses (Primary, Intermediate, Highschool, and University), as wel as on school related
activities (School Camp, Trips etc)
Information about school injury costs
The information you have requested is provided in the attached appendix. When using this data please
refer to the comments about our claims data below, as well as the notes in the appendix.
How we have collated claims information for your request
The attached information about ‘injuries that occurred at school’ (Tables 1 – 3) is based on claims where
the scene of the accident has been recorded as ‘School’. We have separated this data into age groups
which broadly represent different school levels (5 - 10 years old for primary school, 11 – 12 for
intermediate, and 13 – 18 for high school).
The information we can provide you about injuries for school related activities (school trips and camps)
or universities (including polytechnics) is based on key word searches from the accident description field
in claim application forms. This is a free-text field which is completed by the client’s treatment provider
and is not mandatory to complete. The level of detail provided in these descriptions can vary from claim
to claim. Noting these points, we do not consider that this information is robust, and should be
considered as indicative only.
Privacy
ACC does not routinely disclose claim figures below four. Accordingly, we have used the value <4 where
the actual count is between one and three, and ‘<$100’ for any spend less than $100. These measures
have been taken to ensure that individual claims cannot be identified in the information we release. This
decision is made under section 9(2)(a) of the Act. We consider that the public interest in the specific
figures does not outweigh the privacy interests of the Individuals.
Queries about this response
If you have any questions, you can email me at
[email address].If you are not happy
with this decision, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman. Information about how
to do this is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or by phoning 0800 802 602.

Notes
• The data is based on the calendar year in which the claim was registered (Tables 1, 4 and 7), or a
payment was made on the claims (Tables 2-3, 5-6 and 8-9).
• The claims were accepted by ACC for cover.
• Accredited employer claims have been excluded.
• Costs do not include acute treatment provided by public hospitals. Those costs are bulk-funded
by ACC, and the costs are not attributable to individual claims.
• Costs do not include GST.
• The data was extracted on 11 February 2020 and may differ if rerun at a later date.
