Dear Nick,
Please find the following answers to your Official Information Act request of 19 February 2020
regarding alumni scholarships awarded by the University of Otago between 2018 and 2020.
I would like to know the exact number of the Alumni scholarships that you have given out for the year
2018, 2019 and 2020 and what value and how many to each sport.
Details regarding the University of Otago Alumni Scholarships can be found on th
e University of
Otago’s Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships webpage. There are five different kinds of Alumni
Scholarship each with their own regulations and numbers of scholarship awarded. They are:
University of Otago Alumni Appeal Entrance Scholarship (standard value of $6000 for one
year) is usually awarded to between six and eight recipients annually;
University of Otago 71 – 73 Alumni Entrance Scholarship (standard value of $6000 for one
year) usually awards two per year;
University of Otago Law Alumni Scholarship (standard value of $6000) usually awards two
scholarships annually;
University of Otago Alumni in America Inc. Entrance Scholarships awards up to six
scholarships (standard value of $6000); and,
University of Otago Alumni in America Inc. Rugby Performance Entrance Scholarships (value
of up to $16,000 over three years) up to with two offered per annum.
Please note, that these scholarships are awarded to individuals on the basis of a variety of criteria
and with the exception of the Rugby Performance Scholarship are not necessarily related to sporting
achievement.
I am unable to confirm the exact numbers of the Alumni Scholarships were awarded between 2018
and 2020 because we are currently unable to access the appropriate system remotely. However, it
is likely that all advertised scholarships were awarded (20 scholarships). If you would like to have
confirmation of the exact numbers please contact me and I will request this information post lock-
down.
