Dear Reina
I am writing in response to the email you submitted on 23 February 2020 to the Ministry of Justice.
A section of the request was transferred to Police and has been considered pursuant to the Official Information Act 1982. Specifically you requested: The percentage of people that were shot by Police from 2009 - 2019 in New Zealand and what percentage of these people were Maori or Pacific.
I have considered your request and have provided the information in the table below. The table specifies the number of subjects shot by police in New Zealand with a firearm from 2009-2019, by ethnicity if known.
It includes where the outcome was a fatality or non-fatal injury, but does not include where shots were fired by police which missed the subject. Please note, the 2017 figures include one subject, of European ethnicity, in which the coroner was unable to confirm whether the fatality was attributable to shots fired by police.
Police National Headquarters 180 Molesworth Street. PO Box 3017, Wellington 6140, New Zealand. Telephone: 04 474 9499. Fax: 04 498 7400. www.police.govt.nz
If you are not satisfied with my response to your request, you have the right under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act 1982 to ask the Office of the Ombudsman to seek an investigation and review of my decision.
Yours sincerely
Superintendent Andrew Sissons National Manager: Response and Operations
