Dear Mr Reade
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
Re: Mayoral limousine costs
I refer to your letter, which we received on 1 November 2013, requesting a year by year
breakdown of the running costs for the mayoral car since the establishment of Auckland
Council in 2010.
The total cost for the mayoral car is $22,340 per annum. This amount represents a total cost
to the organisation from capital/purchase, fuel, mileage, depreciation, insurance and
registration and all running costs.
The mayoral car is owned by Auckland Council. The running costs are funded by the
mayoral office and deducted from the Mayor’s honorarium. Therefore, the mayoral car is fully
costed into the Mayor’s remuneration package as set and regulated by the Remuneration
Authority, which includes as a condition full private use of the vehicle.
The council does not keep a log book for the mayoral car. However, council records show
that as at 18 October 2013, the current mayoral car had travelled 94,421 kilometres since it
was purchased in April 2011. As Mayor of the largest council in Australasia representing
one-third of New Zealand’s population the Mayor of Auckland must travel frequently and
efficiently to many locations around the entire region to effectively conduct a variety of
mayoral and council business.
I trust this will satisfy your request, however if you have any further queries please contact
me on 09 3010101, quoting Official Information Request No. 9000126147.
I also wish to apologise for the delay in getting this response to you and draw your attention
to your right of complaint to the Office of the Ombudsmen regarding this delay.
Yours sincerely
