Dear Victoria
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
I refer to your online request dated 23 April 2020 in which you ask for, pursuant to the
Official Information Act 1982:
1. Could you please tell me the number of arrests made for offenders by year
between 2010 and 2020 who have been involved with the selling of a child's (under
18) body for sex, and what area these offenders are based in?
2. Is their sentence time also able to be included?
In response to the first part of your question, Police hold statistics regarding the
number of offender proceedings (which means Police have taken action against
someone) for offences that are relevant to sexual services from under 18 year olds.
Those offences are categorised as follows:
1233- Dealing with people under 18 for sex/body parts/forced labour
2972 Induce compel to provide sexual services
2973- Assist under 18 to provide sexual services
2974-Receive earnings from under 18
2975-contract for sex under 18.
I have attached a table titled ‘Offender Proceedings 2010 – 2020 Prostitution
Offences relating to under 18 year olds’ which provides the information requested
and also details the Police District where these offences were reported as occurring.
In relation to the second part of your request regarding sentencing of offenders,
Police are not the lead agency responsible for court proceedings, and we are unable
to provide you with further information about the final outcome of any of the
proceedings referred to, including any sentences received by offenders. That part of
your request is refused under 18(g) of the Official Information Act because the
information is not held.
2
The Ministry of Justice may be able to assist you with this particular part of your
request.
If you are not satisfied with my response to your request you have the right to complain
to the Office of the Ombudsman and seek an investigation and review of my decision.
Yours sincerely
Craig Scott
