Dear Ryan,
I refer to your Official Information Act (OIA) request dated 5 May 2020 in which
you requested the following:
The number of suspected suicides and attempted suicides that Police
attended during the Level 4 lockdown period.
Police proactively release statistics to the public and this information is available on
policedata.nz. The ‘COVID-19 Response’ report wil be the most useful for your
purposes. Please read the instructions on the summary page on how to use the
report. For this particular instance, please do the following:
• Go to policedata.nz and double click on the ‘COVID-19 Response’ report
• From the ‘COVID-19 Response’ report, select the tab labelled ‘Calls for
Service’
• To dril into a geographic area, hover over the ‘District’ name in the ‘District
Breakdown by Alert Level’ Table and click the "+" sign that appears. Then
select the Area you are interested in
• Select the Alert Level period you require in the same Table
• To dril into an Event Type, hover over the ‘Crime and Non-Crime Demand’
name in the ‘Breakdown by Type of Service Demand and Preventative
Activities’ Table and click the "+" sign that appears. Under the ‘Event
Category’ click again the "+" sign that appears. The Event Type you are
interested in (‘Threatens/Attempts Suicide’) falls under the ‘Mental Health’
category.
• You can also download the data using the ‘Download’ icon at the bottom of
the page and selecting ‘Data’.
I trust this information is sufficient for your purposes. If you have any questions
regarding the data or want assistance in extracting the information, please feel free to
contact
[email address]. You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my
decision if you are not satisfied with Police’s response to your request.
Yours sincerely
