[FYI request #13188 email]
Dear Samantha
I write in response to your Official Information Act request of 30 June 2020, seeking information on
the NZ Rural Origins sub-category of the University of Otago MB ChB for the 2019 and 2020 intakes
and on the graduate category waitlist for 2020. Answers to each of your requests follow:
(1) The number of New Zealand Rural Origins sub-category places offered to graduate category and
HSFY applicants.
Graduate category: 10 (2020) and 14 (2019)
HSFY category: 34 (2020) and 41 (2019)
Note that these figures include offers which were declined. They do not include offers made to
applicants under other sub-categories, who were also eligible for consideration under the Rural sub-
category.
(2) Explain why there was not a waitlist for graduate category applicants for entry into the 2020
MBChB cohort.
This request was answered in a response to your earlier query, which was posted to the FYI website
on 7 July 2020. For convenience I reproduce the substantive part of that response here:
Taking into account the overall academic strength of the Graduate cohort across all sub-categories,
the Medical Admissions Committee determines an appropriate academic threshold above which
offers can be made to Rural Graduate sub-category applicants; this allows for some preference to be
given to Rural Graduate sub-category applicants, but not without reference to the capabilities of the
wider cohort. For the 2020 intake, all students above the determined academic threshold were
offered places and so a waitlist was not used.
If you have any questions please do not contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Claire Gallop
