Request for Information 
 
I refer to your email of 22 July 2020 requesting information on whether Environment 
Canterbury is able to view the position of buses in real time, and what discussions 
Environment Canterbury has entered into to become part of or enquire about the Bee 
card system. Your request has been referred to me to reply.  
 
Environment Canterbury is able to view bus position on our network in near to real 
time via the current Real Time Information system.  Bus positioning is transmitted 
every 15 seconds via a radio service. 
  
Environment Canterbury has not entered into, or had discussions about entering, the 
Bee card system. The Bee card system is an interim ticketing solution for nine 
smaller regional councils/public transport authorities until the National Ticketing 
solution is fully deployed in Canterbury, Greater Wellington and Auckland. Once the 
National Ticketing system is established these councils will transition to it away from 
the Bee system.  Canterbury is part of the National Ticketing project and is currently 
scheduled to be first installer in 2022. 
 
You will be aware that if you are not satisfied with this response you are able to refer 
this matter to the Office of the Ombudsman under s27(3) of the LGOIMA.
