Dear Russell Baw
I refer to your Official Information Act request dated 25 August 2020 for information
relating to fleeing driver events.
You requested:
I am interested in the age of people being pursued by police and outcomes for them. I am
aware that a
lot of information is publicly available, but there are some gaps in the data
that I am looking to fill. Can you please provide:
1. The number of serious injuries and deaths (separately) for drivers, other vehicle
occupants, police and third parties (e.g. pedestrians or other drivers not involved
in the pursuit).
Please find the total number of deaths and serious injuries recorded,ยท broken down by
fleeing vehicle occupants, New Zealand Police staff and other third parties in Table One.
There have been no Police officer deaths from fleeing driver events for the period of
2010-2019.
Please note that data on whether the seriously injured person/s in any vehicle was a
driver or a passenger is not held. This part of your request has been refused pursuant to
section 18(g)(i) of the Official Information Act 1982 in that the information requested is not
held by Police and Police has no grounds for believing that the information is held by
another department or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or by a local authority.
2. The number and nature of charges following pursuits.
Fleeing driver notifications do not capture information on any charges laid as a result of
the fleeing driver event. In addition, information about charges filed does not capture
whether the person charged was (prior to charging) a person who fled from Police.
As such, the data that you have requested is not held by Police and has therefore been
refused pursuant to section 18(g)(i) of the Official Information Act 1982 in that the
information requested is not held by Police and Police has no grounds for believing that
the information is held by another department or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or
by a local authority.
