I think this title is in your overseas collection. The author, Dr. Lippa moved to Kawerau as our 
first doctor in 1954 after his time in China and was a highly valued member of the Kawerau 
community until he passed away in 1976. I have two wel -loved copies in our Reference 
col ection but use your copy through interloan for people who want to borrow and read

about his time before moving to Kawerau. We are happy to take the title as a borrowable 
item if you no longer require it but it also raises the question of when does a title become NZ 
material? For us Dr. Lippa’s book is very important to our NZ story and I do get research 
queries at least once a year about this title by locals and people outside the community. ACT

I think this title is in your overseas collection. The author, Dr. Lippa moved to Kawerau as our 
first doctor in 1954 after his time in China and was a highly valued member of the Kawerau 
community until he passed away in 1976. I have two well-loved copies in our Reference 
col ection but use your copy through interloan for people who want to borrow and read 
about his time before moving to Kawerau. We are happy to take the title as a borrowable 
item if you no longer require it but it also raises the question of when does a title become NZ 
material? For us Dr. Lippa’s book is very important to our NZ story and I do get research 
queries at least once a year about this title by locals and people outside the community.

I am Curator of the New Zealand Organ Museum Trust, based in Herbert in North Otago. 
As part of our work we collect books, music, recordings, images etc relating to pipe 
organs and general music history. We have col ected a quantity of redundant books 
from the University of Canterbury Library, as well as from the private collections of Rev 
Dr Ross Wards and Bernard Bicknell.

In October I spoke at the LIANZA Conference on the National Library’s role as stewards of 
Aotearoa’s documentary heritage and the importance of preserving the memory of New 
Zealand and our place in the Pacific.

I reminded attendees that in 2015, fol owing extensive consultation, we updated our 
Collections Policy to focus on New Zealand and Pacific material because no other library in 
the world is going to collect and preserve our stories, that's our job. 
This was followed by email communication out to the library sector. 
The National Library is continuing to look for better homes for some of our overseas 
published books – which does not include Turnbull Library material.

We are  stil   investing  in  our Turnbull and print collections, particularly our school’s 
collection. To make way for our growing collection of New Zealand, Maori and Pacific ACT 
material we need to ensure that our collections and services are managed well for the 
benefit of all New Zealanders.  We value your work, experience and expertise and because 
we are part of the same network you have been given first option on these overseas 
published books. 
If you haven’t yet registered your interest or placed your orders, then you have until 
the 6 January 2020 to email your requests to [email address]. 
We wil  be opening the lists up to community organisations that might benefit from

I’m attaching my “order” – everything highlighted in green is something I think might have a place in 
my collection. However I am not expecting to receive this full amount; if my colleagues have indicated 
interest in the same titles, I am happy to give way to them. And for example I don’t need 10+ 
dictionaries of quotations, it’s just that mine has recently gone AWOL and I keep getting requests for it, 
so I thought, seeing as your collection had some to spare, I could take a couple off your hands. 
 
I made my selections based on publication year and title. I’m not really interested in very academic 
INFORMATION 
materials, I tried to eliminate “literature reviews” and so on, but basically, for my collection, the more 
pictorial, mainstream, accessible, the better. 
 
Please let me know if there’s any further information you require from me. And no hurry, I already have 
plenty in my “to be catalogued” pile as it is, it’s just that I can’t ever resist free books. I’m sure you 
understand!

Just heard the interview of your rehoming books on the internet and the 9(2)(g)(ii)
 would like to 
register their interest in getting some books. We have had no identified librarian but I have taken over the 
responsibility as I believe the prisoners need access to literature. Their interest has increased lots since I have 
been promoting it. Our major problem is with no past librarian we have not had new (used even) books for a 
long time so many prisoners have read all we have. Any you could provide would enhance their education and 
occupy them in a good way.
