James Murdoch
[FYI request #14819 email]
Dear Mr Murdoch
Request for information
IR-01-21-7035
Thank you for your online submission dated 2 March 2021 requesting information
regarding third party software in use by the New Zealand Police.
You requested:
A list of all third-party software used by the New Zealand police on devices including,
but not limited to, Applebranded Phones, Android-based phones, Mac devices,
Windows devices, and iPad Tablets. I Would also like the results organized by type of
device if possible.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982
(OIA) and my response is as follows:
In accordance with sections 6(a) and 6(b) of the OIA Police must refuse to provide a
full, detailed list of third-party applications deployed on Police devices because
providing this information would expose Police to an unacceptable level of cyber
security risk. This would be likely to prejudice the security or defence of New
Zealand, and prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the prevention,
investigation, and detection of offences.
However, I can confirm that Police makes use of some third party software
applications from the Digital Government Products and Services list. Please refer to
https://www.digital.govt.nz/products-and-services/products-and-services-a-z/ for this
list.
If you are not satisfied with my response to your request, you have the right to ask
the Ombudsman to seek an investigation and review of my decision.
Yours sincerely
