Dear Anthony
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email
of 8 March 2021 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
1/ tyre brands including the tyre model that have been tested in the past five years
2/ results of those tests
3/ standards required specific to wet performance
4/ 'policing policy' of imported new budget tyres
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency does not carry out tyre testing, nor does it police the importation of
new budget tyres. Waka Kotahi only requires that tyres meet one of the standards listed in the Land
Transport Rule: Tyres and Wheels 2001 (the Rule). Therefore, I am refusing your request under
section 18(g)(i) of the Act as the information requested is not held by the department or Minister of the
Crown or organisation, and there are no grounds for believing that the information is either held by
another department or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or by a local authority.
Should you wish to view the Rule, it is available online at: www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/rules/tyres-and-
wheels-2001. The approved standards which tyres are required to meet are specified under Section
2.7.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to refuse
this request. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
If you would like to discuss this reply with Waka Kotahi, please contact Davey Uprichard, Manager
Vehicle Standards, by email at [email address].
Yours sincerely
