Thank you for your email to the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment dated 8 March
2021 requesting under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) the following information:
The new target number of properties to be build under the Kiwi Build Program
The number of new properties to be build in Auckland and Wellington over the next 5 years
Your request was transferred to Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities, as we are responsible for
delivery of the KiwiBuild programme.
On 4 September 2019, Hon Dr Megan Woods, Minister of Housing, announced a Reset of the
Government Build Programme. As part of the Reset, the target for the number of KiwiBuild homes
to be built was removed and Minister Woods reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to get more
New Zealanders into warm, dry, and secure homes. Therefore, the first part of your request is
refused under section 18(e) of the Act as the information does not exist.
Progress on the number of KiwiBuild homes being built, sold, and available to buy is now published
monthly on the Government Housing Programme dashboard, which can be found here:

programme-housing-dashboard/ As at 31 January 2021 the KiwiBuild programme has contracted 1,770 KiwiBuild homes to be built
in Auckland and Wellington over the next five years (financial years 2020/2021 to 2024/2025). A
contracted home is defined as one to be built under the KiwiBuild programme by a developer that
has an underwrite agreement, built within a Kāinga Ora redevelopment or built as part of a Land for
Housing development. This number does not include future contracts that may be agreed with
developers to deliver KiwiBuild homes.
A breakdown of the 1,770 KiwiBuild homes contracted to be built in Auckland and Wellington,
together with the number to be built in other parts of New Zealand over the next five years follows:
