Local Radio attempt world record for a good cause.docx
Hi Chris,
I have been communicating with Panmure FM who are attempting a world record to raise
money for charity. I drafted a short story but am unable to publish it unless there is a local board
or council connection… which there isn’t.
However, if you’re happy enough to include a comment (which I have drafted into the attached
copy) then I might get the article online.
This is worth our trouble because:
1. Panmure FM is now happy to help promote our Local Board activities
2. Its for Child Cancer Foundation
3. It’s a local non for profit organisation
Entirely up to you, but it is time relevant.
See draft copied below and attached.
Cathy
Local Radio attempt world record for a good cause
Local Radio Manugakiekie Tāmaki station, Panmure FM 107.0, will be attempting a World Record
for the longest marathon of a radio music show DJ team. Starting on Friday 1 March at 7am, the
team of three DJ’s will aim for 144 hours, or six days continuously on air.
“We decided to do something a little different to help raise money for Child Cancer Foundation,
who help support kiwi kids with cancer and their families” Says Darren Masters Managing
Director at Panmure FM.
The previous record is 106.5 hours, made by at DJ team in Dubai in 2018, and this Panmure FM
team believe they can ‘smash’ the record.
“It’s been great to see so many organisations step up in support of our efforts. Having the
community behind us sure will help us along the way”
Chair of Maungakiekie Tamaki Local Board, Chris Makoare is impressed with the effort the team
are putting into the record attempt “six days is a long time to be doing what they do” says Chris.
“It will be great to see a local team to break this World Record and raise funds for charity along
the way.

Have just driven it. Definitely ‘better’ but, and there is always a but, I really feel that that left lane
that you can either go far left into Jellicoe or right into Queens needs a massive arrow indicating
to drive on that side of the road. Others thoughts? Yes, the new white markings are better and
yes, people should be following them but they seem to have minimal trouble with arrows but
have major troubles with plain lines. I have a private pilots licence and all I can say is I am glad
some of these people don’t fly. Would be highly confusing for them following runway or taxiway
markings!! Anyway, will keep an ear out and air as appropriate to follow the lines and not do
illegal, dangerous U-turns. Totally echo Howard’s comments though on a stranger coming in on
unfamiliar road in the evening, combine that with some alcohol and speed and it’s a perfect mix
for that swiss cheese to align holes.

It will largely resolve itself as locals realise the trap. It's a mistake someone makes only once.
So time will cure it. Until someone unfamiliar with the area comes along one dark wet night.
Then, someone dies.
And this is deemed "safer"than the roundabout it replaced? Riiiigghhht.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for this.
With regards to driver behaviour – we will be contacting Police to monitor this
through until the final layout in October when turning restrictions for Ireland Road
are removed. Unfortunately, you are correct, there is some risky driver behaviour
taking place – we will also look at what else we can do in terms of barriers and
signage on this front.
With regards to the main issue of traffic approaching Queens Road from EP
Highway – we have monitored the situation this morning after changes were made
last night (barrier poles and firm line markings). We did not see any vehciles making
the same error of driving into the wrong the lane so it appears this is working. We
will continue to review over coming days.
I will take your comments about signage to the team and see what we can do.
Thanks,
Matt

Subject: RE: REPLACE "URGENT" WITH "IMMEDIATE", PLEASE!
Good morning
I’ve just spent an hour on our CCTV cameras that overlook the new intersection.
The traffic is flowing well this morning but bad driver behaviour absolutely shocks
me.
Over that hour, I didn’t see any vehicle come into the wrong side of Queens Rd,
unlike yesterday morning.
If the traffic is busy and flowing well there does not seem to be a problem, it’s
when there are few cars around people will take the chance to short cut.
Vehicles U turning by pushing cones aside with there car, and U turning which
require a backing manoeuvre before they can get around.
I also noted pedestrians climbing over the orange barriers.
My comments are – is the signage for drivers coming down Jellicoe Rd or even
Pleasant View Rd, clear enough so they know that they need to head along
Mountain/Forge Way?
Currently the sign back at Lunn Ave says New Road Layout – Pakuranga – 3
August – I don’t see how this highlights the changes to the intersection – It should
read – New Road Layout – Queens Rd.
On the whole the buses that are using Jellicoe Rd (Mobil Station is now a bus
filling station) seem to be able to negotiate the speed table at the bottom of Jellicoe
Rd without too much trouble.
Taniela spend 20 minutes at the speed table and noticed a number of cars scrapping
across the northern side of the table so that might need some further thought. You
can see the scrapes on the hump quite clearly.

IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN! At 11.10am today I was confronted with FOUR vehicles,
including a Watercare truck, coming at me HEAD-ON off the AMETI intersection the
wrong way into Queens Road. All were forced to make three-point turns in front of
other vehicles to get back out of the intersection.
Panmure Town Centre Manager Chris Sutton advises that this was one of TWO
incidents this morning.
This has to be fixed IMMEDIATELY before someone is killed or seriously injured!

Hi Councillor Bartley and everyone,
Please note, this is an initial response – I will send a more detailed outline of our
mitigations for safety issues including images soon and I am gathering this info from
the traffic team at present. For now though:
Firstly, thanks to everyone for raising your views around safety – it is important for
us to get feedback. We have already starting setting up a traffic planning group
with emergency services and LB reps to ensure a proactive approach around
gathering feedback on traffic plans moving forward.
Intersection safety:
Since the new intersection layout has been in place, we have made a number of
iterative changes to improve safety, especially regarding the approach from EP
Highway to Queens Road – we have noticed some improvements however it has
been clear that more is needed. Last night, we made further more significant
changes in the form of road markings and we plan further significant changes
tonight with the introduction of orange barrier poles and ‘firm’ line markings to
help make it absolutely clear and more intuitive for motorists. We are also
reviewing clearer signage.
Ireland Road:
The barriers will also be used to assist with safety around some of the issues raised
around motorists turning into Ireland Road – it is important to note that many of
the issues at Ireland Road are caused by motorists making known illegal moves but
we acknowledge the need to mitigate this) and as mentioned, we will make
required changes. The turning restrictions on Ireland Rd will be removed by Oct.
As mentioned, I will come back with more detail soon but in thought I would give
high level info now in the interests of providing an update ASAP.
Thanks,
Matt

Good morning Tracey
I would like to highlight to the LB members our concern about the design of the new intersection
at the western end of Queens Rd.
We are recording record amount of vehicles entering the wrong side of the Queens Rd, albeit
over night when there is reduced traffic flow heading westwards out of Queens Rd.
We are getting reports from the Panmure Community Action Group and the Mt Wellington

area.
I aim to prepare a document of incidents for the members.

Hello again Matt,
I have to agree with Chris Sutton on the matter of the buses. We were always given to understand that at least some of the bus
services from Pakuranga and Howick would continue to come through Queens Road, as this is essential for many visitors to the
Panmure Town Centre.
Has the Panmure community been misled on this issue? We have already lost local network bus services down Kings Road,
Dunkirk Road and Matapan Road. Are ALL services to and from Howick and Pakuranga to be transferred out of Queens Road and
on to the new busway?

Good afternoon Matt
Can I please pull you up on your comment that:
The volume of buses through Queens shall be drastically reduced to local network
only. It has been my understanding that along with the local network, buses will still come through Queens Rd from the eastern
suburbs of Pakuranga and Howick on a reduced volume. We fought for the continuation of some buses per hour coming up
Church Cres, through Queens Rd to the Station, due to the high use of passengers coming to Panmure for the medical centres and
food outlets including the DH Supermarket, are you now saying that service has been completely eliminated?
In regards to the points
has made, I have spent time looking at the mock ups and diagrams of the new intersection that I
s7(2)(a): Privacy of natural persons
have received over the years. Each shows something slightly different but not one of them show the raised surface area of the
intersection between Mahi Toi and Queens Rd. I appreciate that planting will highlight the road edges but still can’t see how the
error of heading (naturally) straight ahead into the wrong side of Queens Rd will be eliminated.
Can you please let me know of a similar intersection design in Auckland as I would like to take a look at how it works.
In regards to the raised informal crossing table, I would be surprised if it is heavily used, probably by pedestrians coming from
Jellicoe Rd to go to Ireland Rd or Lagoon Drive. We can observe via CCTV the public regularly using the crossing in front of the
old Postshop/Kiwibank, if they want to head to Ireland/Lagoon and the southside of Ep Highway.

Hello Matt,
I must admit that I cannot understand the planners’ reasoning here. The moment that you create an “informal” crossing, as
clearly shown on the map, then it will automatically become a pedestrian crossing and will be used as such. To state that it “will
not get motorist lane warnings / signage or line marked crossings on top of the speed table” and then add that “it has been made
safe to ensure pedestrians that choose to use it are safe” seems to be a complete contradiction.
Also, buses are not the only large, high-sided vehicles that will use Queens Road. Other – and larger – vehicles will do so, as they
have always done, and will present similar blockages of views.
Am I completely alone in seeing a problem here? If so, then I’ll leave it to the experts. If not, perhaps someone else can provide an
opinion.
Thanks,

Hi s7(2)(a): Privacy of natural persons
Thanks for raising this concern.
This raised speed table is not intended to be a formal pedestrian crossing point, and therefore will not get motorist lane warnings
/ signage or line marked crossings on top of the speed table. Pedestrians may informally use this is a crossing point; subsequently
it has been made safe to ensure pedestrians that choose to use it are safe.
The Queens road bus route at present is highly used by all buses at this time, and does not reflect the actual volume once the
dedicated bus route is open. The volume of buses through Queens shall be drastically reduced to local network only. However,
we will look at putting safety signs in place as a precaution during this time of heavier bus use.
The snap shot below shows clearly the final consented and approved design highlighting that the raised table on Queens Rd is not
a pedestrian crossing – and the reason it is not, is due to the traffic light phasing and getting vehicles through the lights without
stacking up Queens Road.
The Intersection and surrounding area will be monitored post construction to ascertain any safety concerns once it is bedded in.
I hope this answers your query? Thanks

Subject: Is this another potential blind spot?
Hello everyone,
Please see the attached photo I took a couple of weeks ago of the new intersection with traffic coming off the intersection into
the first pedestrian crossing on Queens Road. It strikes me from this image that this could be another potential blind spot for
drivers and pedestrians caused by not only the turn itself but also the raised road level.
As you can see, the driver of the vehicle coming off the intersection would not be able to see past the westbound traffic waiting at
the lights before they are most of the way through the turn. Likewise, a pedestrian crossing from left to right here would be even
less able to see what was coming around the corner before they were at least halfway across the crossing. Again, the artificially-
raised road level here is the main culprit.
Is this likely to become another hazard for both pedestrians and motorists at this crossing?
Thanks,

Thanks Mark there are concerns in the community about night time and how cars are
turning into wrong lanes at night and they are right. Last night in was driving from eph
into queens rd and for some reason at night it's harder to navigate and you naturally
drive into the wrong lane from eph because of the layout of the road leads you to drive
into queens road oncoming traffic lane. Thankfully there was a sign that said wrong lane
but is this coming to be the layout for the intersection permanently if so I can see it will
be dangerous going forward. So many concerns about this layout. Also the media were
on site on Friday as I drove past them meeting with
and Darren.

know what is the plan to address these safety concerns asap. Thank you

Hi Councillor
We've set up a meeting with the stakeholders for mid next week to discuss their
concerns. We're also trying to set up a meeting with yourself and the Local Board chair.
In the meantime, our consultants (Beca) have undertaken sightline investigations and
put together reasoning for why the speed table is in the present location. The team is
also investigating instances of vehicles going into the wrong lane through the current
interim intersection setup to determine how often it happens and how best to address
this.
There were also questions around planned bus services through the Panmure town
centre once the busway opens, as currently a higher number of services run through.
The services that were operating prior to the works commencing won't be cut through
the town centre. Only the ones introduced or re-directed through the town centre due to
the busway construction will be shifted onto the busway upon completion.
