Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 6 April 2021 regarding Family Court
Protection Order applications. Your request was for the following:
I would like to request the number of Temporary protection orders filed and granted per year from
2010 and how many of those orders were discharged in a defended court hearing.
Interpretation
Please note that the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry) has interpreted your request for the number of
Temporary Protection Orders:
•
“filed” to mean the numbers of applications for Protection Orders filed; and
•
“discharged” to mean the numbers of Discharge Protection Order applications granted.

In response to your request, the information you have requested is available on the Ministry’s website. You
may wish to refer to:
• Tables 1 and 4 in this lin

numbers of applications where Temporary Protection Orders were granted
each financial year since
2010/2011; and
• Table 3b in this lin
k here, for the number of Discharge Protection Order applications granted each
financial year since 2010/2011.
Therefore, I am refusing your request under section 18(d) of the OIA as the information you have requested is
publicly available on the Ministry’s website.
Please note that a review of how Protection Order application information is recorded under the Family
Violence Act 2018 is currently underway. Therefore, statistical information for July 2020 onwards is currently
unavailable.
