Dear Lional Jones
Official Information Act request relating to employment investigations in ministers’
offices
Thank you for your request made under the Official Information Act (the Act), received on
31 May 2021. You requested:
“1. From the start of October 2017 to today’s date, how many seperate investigations
were carried out involving staff either employed in Minister’s offices or supporting
Minister’s offices, and break down into:
A) Complaints made against Ministers versus complaints made against either
staff in Minister’s offices, or supporting Minister’s offices
B) Number of staff that resigned during or after an investigation involving them
C) Number of staff that were otherwise dismissed or left employment or were
redeployed during or after an investigation involving them
D) Number of complaints that resulted in a payment at the conclusion (regardless
of outcome) of an investigation
E) As at today’s date, the number of open or ongoing investigations involving
staff either employed in Minister’s offices or supporting Minister’s offices ”
In your request you advise that: “
staff supporting Minister’s offices” shal be defined as staff
employed by Parliamentary or Ministerial Services”.
I believe that the part of your request for information relating to staff employed by Ministerial
Services in Ministers’ offices is more closely connected to the functions of the Department of
Internal Affairs (the Department). Accordingly, I have decided under section 14(b)(ii) of the Act
to transfer this part of your request to the Department.
In regard to your request for information relating to staff employed by Parliamentary Service in
Ministers’ offices, this part of your request is refused under section 18(g)(i) of the Act as the
information requested is not held by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and we
have no grounds for believing that the information is held by another department. Please note
that the Parliamentary Service is not subject to the Act
The Department has the usual timeframes under the Act from receipt of this transfer to make
a decision on your request.
Yours sincerely
Sarah Corbett
