Thank you for your request dated 10 June 2021 seeking information under Official
Information Act 1982 (OIA) relating to the sharing of video and audio information
between McDonalds Restaurants New Zealand Ltd., its Franchisees and New Zealand
Police.
You requested the following information:

Correspondence between McDonalds Restaurants New Zealand Ltd, its
Franchisees and New Zealand Police that relate to the sharing of video and audio
information collected at McDonalds' premises

Any specific agreements, contracts and/or details of Police campaigns that are
ongoing between McDonalds Restaurants New Zealand Ltd, its Franchisees and
New Zealand Police regarding the sharing of video and/or audio information
collected at McDonalds' restaurants in New Zealand
•
Whether McDonalds Restaurants New Zealand ltd and/or its Franchisees share
audio or video footage from inside its restaurants with New Zealand Police.
With respect to the first two parts of your request, Police has not located any relevant
correspondence or other documents containing relevant information. It is possible that
local correspondence has occurred between staff in Police Districts and local McDonalds
Franchisees, but Police has not discovered any such correspondence in a search of the
relevant systems. These parts of your request are refused under s18(e) of the OIA as the
documentation alleged to contain the information requested does not exist or, despite
reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
With respect to the third part of your request, Police often obtains CCTV footage from
private premises as part of the criminal investigation process where the footage
contains evidence of possible criminal offending. If it was relevant, this could include
audio or video footage from a McDonalds premises. Police is unable to confirm the
individual circumstances under which this has occurred, if ever, as there is no specific
data available in Police records that would assist in determining relevant cases.
