Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation, dated
7 August 2021.
Request
You requested the following:
1.
The Dept of Conservation expenditure on Fire Control for the FY2020/21. 2.
The Dept of Conservation's fire suppression costs for attendance at fires which
originated on DOC land for the period FY2020/21.
3.
The Dept of Conservation's fire suppression costs for attendance at fires that did not
originate on DOC land for the period FY2020/21.
4.
A breakdown of the fire suppression costs that DOC recovered or intend to recover
from FENZ for the period FY2020/21.
Department response
The nature of your request seeks information concerning the Department’s fire control costs
and reflects a type of request that you have made annually for the last few years.
In responding, the Department has taken into account its earlier responses so as to ensure
the underlying basis for the figures relayed to you align, with appropriate commentary also
provided.
Following your numbering, for the 2020/21 financial year, the Department responds as below.
Question 1 The Department’s expenditure on fire control for the 2020/21 financial year was $4,919,000.
This is comprised of $2,708,000 (Readiness), $2,071,000 (Fires on public conservation land
(PCL)) and $140,000 (Fires off PCL).
Question 2
The Department’s fire suppression costs for attendance at fires which originated on PCL for
the 2020/21 financial year were $2,071,000.
This includes Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) attendance costs, charged to the
Department. Please note that this figure may not capture all costs for fires attended for the
2020/21 financial year, where those costs have not yet been concluded.
Question 3
The Department’s fire suppression costs for attendance at fires that did not originate on PCL
for 2020/21 financial year was $140,000.
Question 4
A breakdown of the fire suppression costs that the Department recovered or intends to recover
from FENZ for the 2020/21 financial year is outlined below:

The Department’s financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June.
