[FYI request #16605 email]
Dear Troy Cornwall
Thank you for your email of 14 September 2021 requesting information relating to the list of
ornamental fish and marine invertebrates eligible for import. Your request has been
considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
You requested the following:
I would like to have a copy of the following for all requests to change the list of Ornamental
fish and marine invertebrates eligible for import since 2016.
1) The request.
2) The outcomes of the request.
3) All correspondence related to the request.
The Ministry for Primary Industries applied to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)
on behalf of importers to determine that
Colossoma bidens (red-bellied pacu) is not a new
organism for the purposes of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act. The EPA
agreed with this. Following this determination, MPI was able to add red-bellied pacu to the
Import Health Standard. MPI’s application to the EPA, which includes correspondence with
stakeholders, is available on the EPA website:
https://www.epa.govt.nz/assets/FileAPI/hsno-
ar/APP203795/6141aa754a/APP203795-Application.pdf. The EPA’s determination is
attached as Appendix One.
The EPA has not received any applications to import for release any ornamental fish and
marine invertebrates since 2016.
Should you have any concerns with this response, I would encourage you to raise these with
the Ministry for Primary Industries at
[email address]. Alternatively, you
are advised of your right to also raise any concerns with the Office of the Ombudsman.
Contact details are: Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143 or at
