Dear Tamsyn
Extending the time to respond to your request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 10 September 2021 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
-
Total car registrations: The total number of vehicles registered.
-
Total electric car registrations: The number of electric vehicles registered, where electric
is defined as the categories electric, electric fuel cell hydrogen and electric fuel cell other.
-
Total hybrid car registrations: The number of hybrid vehicles registered, where hybrid is
defined as the categories plugin petrol hybrid, plugin diesel hybrid, petrol hybrid, diesel
hybrid, electric [petrol extended], electrc [diesel extended], petrol electric hybrid and
diesel electric hybrid.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is extending the 20 working days available to us to respond to your
request. This is allowed for under section 15A of the Act. We need 15 more working days to respond
to your request. We will send you our response on or before 29 October 2021.
We are extending the deadline because Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s system which gathers
data in the Statistical Area 2 (SA2) format you have requested does not currently allow for this without
undertaking a manual search through a large quantity of information which would unreasonably
interfere with the operations of Waka Kotahi. As a result, it will take us more than 20 working days to
thoroughly respond to your request.
However, the Statistical Analysis team has been developing a capability which would also allow this
data to be compiled and that this work is nearly complete. It is expected that that this work will take 10-
15 working days to complete, test, and then produce the data you have requested.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to
extend the time we will take to respond to your request. You can find the contact details for the
Ombudsman at: www.ombudsman.parliament.nz
If you would like to discuss the extension with Waka Kotahi, please contact us via email to
[email address].
Yours sincerely
Leisa Coley
