Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-014352
Thank you for your email of 29 September 2021, asking for the fol owing information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I request under the OIA statistical data in the last 10 years (if any) in relation to the number of
accepted claims for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome/Median Nerve Compression as WRGPI resulting
from Dental Hygienist work.
Data provided
ACC conducted a search for accepted claims where the injury description relates to carpal tunnel
syndrome, the work classification unit is dental services, and the claim is a work-related claim.
Between 1 January 2011 and 30 September 2021, there were less than four claims that meet the criteria
of your request.
Notes about the data
• Accredited employer claims have been excluded as ACC holds little data about these claims.
• New claims are counted by the date they are lodged with ACC. A claim can be lodged
immediately after an injury or at a later date.
• A claim may have multiple injuries. In this information an injury has been included if the injury
description relates to carpal tunnel syndrome, whether it is the primary injury or a secondary
injury. However, each claim is only counted once in this dataset.
• Data were extracted on 11 October 2021 and may differ if rerun at a later date.
ACC takes client privacy seriously
ACC does not routinely disclose low value numbers related to claims. Accordingly, we cannot provide
the exact number of claims, or a further breakdown of the data by year. This limits the potential for
particular individuals, or matters specific to certain individuals, from being identified.
Withholding in this way is necessary to protect the privacy of these individuals under section 9(2)(a) of
the Act. In doing so, we have considered the public interest in making the information available and
have determined that it does not outweigh the need to protect the privacy of these persons.
