Request for information 2014/094 
I  refer  to  your  request  for  information  dated  25  June  2014,  which  was  received  by  Greater 
Wellington Regional Council on 25 June 2014. You have requested the following information: 
“…I would like to know if any or all of the CCTV cameras around the Wellington region have had 
facial  recognition  software/technology  tested  or  used  through  them  at  any  time  since  they  were 
installed. 
Also  is  facial  recognition  software/technology  being  used  at  present  through  any  of  the  CCTV 
cameras around the Wellington region and if not, are there any plans to implement such technology 
into Wellingtons CCTV network?” 
I  can  confirm  that  the  CCTV  cameras  installed  in  the  Wellington  region  by  Greater  Wellington 
Regional  Council  do  not  have  any  facial  recognition  capabilities  and,  as  such,  facial  recognition 
technology has not been used or tested on Greater Wellington Regional Council’s CCTV cameras. 
There  are  currently  no  plans  to  implement  facial  recognition  technology  into  Greater  Wellington 
Regional Council’s CCTV network. 
If you have any concerns with the decision(s) referred to in this letter, you have the right to request 
an  investigation  and  review  by  the  Ombudsman  under  section  27(3)  of  the  Local  Government 
Official Information and Meetings Act 1987.
