• In October 2020, Te Pae Wānanga Research and Publishing team members
attended a workshop on Web Accessibility. This workshop was presented by a
Principal Advisor, Accessibility at the Department of Internal Affairs.
• Website design team members attend an Accessibility Community of Practice
Hui monthly,
• Te Mata Production team regularly participates within the New Zealand
government web community,
• All new alternative text has been developed to become more descriptive and
effective.
Improvements implemented through new content to improve accessibility and
usability on internal and external websites
• Internally, transcripts have been added to the videos of Induction E-learning
modules.
• Te Tai Whakaea Treaty Settlement Stories content
a) New images uploaded onto Te Tai now have alternative text, with
additional te reo Māori alternative text given to relevant images,
b) New video content uploaded onto Te Tai now have closed captioning,
and some videos (depending on content) have transcripts in both te reo
Māori and English,
c) Transcripts have been provided for the Public History Talks and podcast
series

• Te Ara content
a) New images uploaded onto Te Ara now have alternative text, with
additional te reo Māori alternative text given to relevant images,
b) In August 2020, an entry on New Zealand Sign Language was uploaded
into Te Ara, which is also delivered in NZSL via video. This work was
completed with engagement from Deaf community organisations; this
task was contracted out to the author of the entry.
Changes to existing content and ongoing work to improve accessibility and
usability of internal and external websites
• Current Te Ara content
a. As of December 2020, old flash assets on Te Ara have been replaced
with new templates for interactive content, developed in accordance with
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
• 28th Māori Battalion website
a) Website made responsive, many changes in the new design were to
improve accessibility and usability of the site including improved colour

contrast. Responsive site launched on 28maoribattalion.org.nz in
February 2021
• Procurement began in 2021 for transcribing services for the eventual
implementation of closed captioning across all of the videos on Te Ara.
• Progression through the task list identified in 2017 Web Standards Self-
Assessment,
• Scoping on a new corporate site (www.mch.govt.nz), with accessibility a key
focus of the scope.
