Tēnā koe Daniel
On 23 November 2021
, you emailed my office requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act), the following information:
•
A list of the Youth MPs and the electorates they represented in the 1st Youth Parliament of
1994. I have been unable to find such information on related websites.
Youth Parliament is an opportunity for young New Zealanders to learn first-hand about New
Zealand’s democracy and to influence decision making. Youth Parliament replicates the real
Parliament as close as possible.
Youth Parliament has been held regularly since 1994 when it was first held to mark the 20th
anniversary of the lowering of the voting age to 18 years. This was during the 44th New Zealand
Parliament which consisted of ninety-nine representatives.
The inaugural Youth Parliament was a short event that involved young people coming to Parliament
for an education day. Due to the success of the event, Cabinet invited the Minister of Youth Affairs
to hold a Youth Parliament every three years from 1997.

Please find the following documents identified as in scope of your request attached to this response:
• List of 1994 electorate seats
• 1994 Youth Parliament attendees list
You wil note that the addresses of the individuals are withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act in
order to protect the privacy of natural persons. The need to protect the privacy of these individuals
outweighs any public interest in this information.
A small amount of information has also deemed to be ‘outside of scope’ of the request, as this
information was administrative in nature.
