Dear Andrew
Re:
Official Information Act request – Treatment protocols – guidelines / procedures
ADHB Ref: 20211209-1118
I refer to your Official Information Act request dated 25 November 2021 to the Ministry of Health
(MoH) and the transfer from MoH to Auckland DHB dated
9 December 2021 requesting the
following information:
1. Please provide Guidelines/Procedures for the management of postoperative Urinary
Retention (POUR)
2. Please provide Guidelines/procedure for the management/prevention of persistent
Postsurgical Pain
3. Please provide Guidelines/procedure in the treatment of patients after a suicide attempt
and/or suicidal ideation
4. Please provide Guidelines/procedure differentiating subtypes of primary (idiopathic)
constipation
Response
1. Please provide Guidelines/Procedures for the management of postoperative Urinary
Retention (POUR)
There is no one specific document regarding management of postoperative urinary
retention. The guidelines we have supplied in Attachments 1-4 all relate to urinary
retention.
2. Please provide Guidelines/procedure for the management/prevention of persistent
Postsurgical Pain
No one guideline/procedure covers management/prevention of persistent postsurgical pain,
but it is embodied in everything the acute pain service does and their entire practice which
is research based, very extensive and all aligns to the prevention of acute pain becoming a
chronic pain issue. There are many individual documents that could relate to the surgical
patient considering different modalities of administration as well as different opioids or
therapeutic interventions. We have supplied two key documents which are examples.
Please see Attachments 5 and 6.

The key related documents relating to constipation are supplied as Attachments 10 and 11.
You are entitled to seek a review of the response by the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of
