1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,"Te urungi, the steadying oar of the waka. I found the story behind this very inspiring. Unfortuantely i was only able to attend on Friday and Sunday, but i was familiar with the tools provided to develop the pitch. I wish i had been available to experience the rest of the hui but the program booklet has provided good insight into evaluation and the current state of arts, culture ans heritage in NZ.",Yes,,A little more,Thank you,Having the pōwhiri put most of my nerves at ease. Friday night was really fun. ,As i wasn’t there for most of the Saturday i can’t really say!,

1- Wellington,,Yes,,No,,No,,The same,"We came with bags of inspiration. We came as experts, but other people were given those labels. We came to something created from a Te Ao Māori ‘framework’ but delivered in an english booklet. My waiata was weak, and you set the bar at the most basic of levels. We were presented with a shiny translation of Patricia Grace’s work before honouring the original art that is her words on paper. Matahi Brightwell demonstrated minimum viable prototyping and presented to the institution what you have to do when the institution doesn’t believe in you. Warren Maxwell while building a one-man sonic army described himself as conforming to city wears and just wanting to get back to his gumboots in Featherston. We sat in a ‘creative space’ devoid of any windows that was dressed with plants conforming to the pots from which they are hired. The wairua of the space was devoid of oxygen being able to flow through and cross ventilate. The flow ran the wrong way (top down) and this was demonstrated by hanging your ‘branding’ upside down – it’s the first iteration… Can we ‘dress’ the room with creatives actually being creative in - weaving, painting, making music. How much did you spend on hallway lighting? Who was the space built for? Did we ask the spatial designer expert in the room, what wasn’t working? How we could have adjusted it? Could we have done it together and built it as a community? What happened to the Zen Room? How did you create space to engage and listen to those you’ve have never had a relationship or conversation with? Is there space for talanoa to clear the air before we even begin? We needed more time. We need to be able to meet everybody in the room before people started paddling individual wakas in their own directions. We need less sprints and more marathons. How do we apply sustainability/accessibility principles to a sprint? Covid money seems to be burning holes in the government pockets - in the race towards budget year. Let's slow down and take a breath. We need space that’s multi-generational, where kids and nans can co-exist. If we’re building for ‘our communities’, the system has to be designed for the most marginalised within those communities to be able to lead. That’s where we’ll find true innovation. Keep walking towards the future.","The kai was mean, but the kōrero was more fulfilling. Great to see bureaucracy taking steps towards meeting artists at their level.",If you ask about accessible support - deliver it. Design your process for those who are marginalised and underrepresented.,
1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,"Some of the other teams' projects/products, which are already in the market",Yes,,A little more,Thanks so much. This series of events alone is a massive boost to the creative community. ,The dedicated time to work on this particular idea,"For those of us with semi-complicated whānau and child care commitments, it can be challenging to attend weekend events. At least without some negotiations at home! This might prevent some folks from signing up at the time (in the window of opportunity that's afforded online). ",
1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,opportunity mapping ,Yes,,A little more,"Just really found it incredibly useful, and want to thank Sebastian in particular from Manatu Taonga who was instrumental in making our weekend very enjoyable and productive.","The people and the way it was run, and how collaborative, safe and inclusive it was.",We certainly felt for the panel having back to back sharing sessions! Hope they made it through :) ,
1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,"start ups, skills",Yes,,A lot more,"Maori do better in face to face situations when they are together, it was a much better process than the traditional way of submitting a proposal","being with other Maori, sharing ideas, supporting each other, having expert help","Let maori and Pacifica people know before opening the registrations to others, we are generally not as fast on the uptake as Pakeha, which I think showed in the demographic that attended. Keep the atmosphere as it was, relaxed and Maori focussed, others can fit into the maori way i.e relaxed, fun, humorous and focussed.",

1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,Lean Canvas,Yes,,A little more,"I felt like there were lots of people that were being paid to work at the event ( facilitators, lawyers, designers etc) and that none of them were the artists. Again we were being asked essentially to work and share our ideas and generosity for free. This really felt wrong. I learnt some new things but most of it was not new. ( I have worked in theatre for nearly 30 years) In many ways we were still being asked to write funding applications and invest multiple unpaid hours to do so, without any assurance that anything will come of it. And still we have to wait weeks to find out if our applications will be successful. There was also some truly poor communication around the event. People were not at all clear what it was. I appreciate the idea but think that there could be a lot of work done with actual artists around how such an event could service artists and Arts, culture and heritage."," Felt suitably held and manaakied, nice environment , great speakers."," Make it a lot shorter, or pay artists for their time. While I appreciate the philosophy that it takes time to Korero, the reality was the length of the event and the short notice period given, meant I worked 12 days without a break, (and got sick).",
1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,The Lean Canvas and Opportunity Statement tools and processes were very helpful,Yes,,A little more,Thank you for the opportunity and looking forward to hearing how this kaupapa develops,A great and warm and inviting atmosphere. Simon and Josie did a wonderful job of hosting. The focussed time working on the project. Other creatives being around and also working on their respective projects The gust speakers were great and a nice touch,Given more information and lead in time around the kaupapa of the event. Ie. knowing we would either be pitching a project or would need a project plan. We could have then made much better use of the experts and resource available rather than scrambling to write a pitch. Some coaching on how to pitch a project could be a useful skill to offer.,
1- Wellington,,Yes,,No,,Yes,,A lot less,Really appreciate everyone’s mahi to achieve an absolutely amazing event/kaupapa. From how Te Urungi was written all the way down to the the setting up of the room!! perfect!! Tēnā rawa atu koutou katoa!! ,"I really enjoyed that the kaimahi created such a beautiful and safe environment, the encouragement to Kōrero i te reo Māori. Normalising it. Also the amount of support from different Kaitiaki we had and how they were from all walks of life, and how their appreciation for Te ao Māori. I also loved that the framework of Te Urungi was a derived from Māori whakaaro and translated into English, not the other way around. Also incorporating Pōwhiri, poroporoaki. Acknowledging tāngata whenua ",Nah nothing really. As you go around the country. You’ll learn different things. But one thing for me is maintain the connection and appreciation to Te ao Māori and continue to mihi to the tāngata whenua. ,
1- Wellington,,Yes,,No,,Yes,,A little more,Great event. This should be build on as and utilized more.,Working as a collective. Having experts and advisors on tap for quick answers and sounding boards,Have more engagement in the community that usually don't get these opportunities. So they have a awareness of this and are ready to be part of the first in first serve process.,
1- Wellington,,Yes,,No,,Yes,,A little more,The weekend itself was absolutely wonderful. It was so well thought out and the attendees were so well cared for.,I LOVED how equitable and safe the space felt. It didn't matter how each of us came to the space. We were all held with the same level of respect and support.,"Although the weekend felt open and transparent and speaking with members of Creative HQ and the Ministry was easy, once we left the event, it became a very different experience. The walls went up and receiving any additional information or clarification became difficult and delayed through the support email. I would set up the expectation that those who attended the weekend should make sure that they get answers to all of their questions while they're on-site because they won't be able to get such clear, open answers once the weekend has ended. Other than that, it was great!",
1- Wellington,,Yes,,Yes,"""Red sea, Blue sea""...",Yes,,A little more,Thank you for a welcoming & inspiring weekend! ,"Our facilitator was fantastic, understanding & knowledgeable.",Very disappointed that there were several registered participants that didn't bother to turn up. Not sure what you'd do to remedy that issue but it was annoying for the lack of respect. As an event I thought the format was exceptional & well produced.,
2 - Online,,Yes,,No,,,,The same,"It was so exciting to have this range of people gathered together, however establishing ways for sharing and community building would be a fantastic way to connect and cross pollinate ideas, and build community in the longer term.",The thoughtful guidance provided by our Kaiāwhina.,"More opportunities for community collaboration, it felt like everyone was focused on their own work and there wasn't a community of sharing established that could have enriched projects. This could also be done long term as a way for the community to stay connected, there are some great plugins for the likes of Slack that can help facilitate and set up meetings within communities.",
2 - Online,,No,,Yes,Lean Canvas and Crowdcast,,,The same,"Running workshops that attendance is required at creates huge issues around accessibility - people must be available on a particular day, particular time in order to access the fund. This restricts so many more people than a ""standard"" application process would - as those applications allow the time and space for people to engage with on their own agenda, with the support they need etc. The people that have been excluded from this process; people with poor internet connections, with poor technology or tech skills, neurodiverse people, people that have a show that day, a board meeting, a tangi, a festival, people that need to work - it's an extremely restrictive way of gatekeeping.",Not much - the intention of the online format seemed to be very confused,"The online event seemed to have aspirations of being a collaborative workshop but nothing was actually in place for that to function. The entire day could have been a pre-recorded session, that applicants engaged with in their own time. The ""expert sessions"" could have been them giving a generic lecture in response to submitted questions/ concepts for people to tune in to. Attendees should have been advised long in advance who the experts were, with their bios, so people had time to consider what they might want to discuss with them. Not the night before. The entire day plan should have been more clearly articulated well in advance - with information on what sessions were compulsory to attend and which were just repeating published information. The CHQ staff were unable to answer questions about the fund beyond what had been published online - which it seemed that most people involved in the online session were all competent enough to have read all the published materials, had come with developed ideas, and were there to ask specific questions. The information/advise being shared in different groups was contradictory. All questions asked and answered across the day should have been published and shared with all that attended. The platforms used created a difficult paradigm of having to jump between platforms and check what is going on. ",
2 - Online,,Yes,,Yes,Crowdcast,,,A little less,"Comparing this process to other funding application processes was interesting. The karakia, talk and even seeing the struggle to make technology behave, were the most relateable parts of this. The number of professional administrators was intimdating and there was a advantage to big organisations because their work was from professional administrators better known/acknowledge in the art world, creating an immediate lesser feeling in a smaller, rural and already slightly cynical mid careers group of artists . Fear of it being another round of the 'in' crowd being the current fashion, would be those that got funding. It would be interesting to see lists of funding awarded from central and regional government to assess how often groups/persons as opposed to projects that fronted for persons were awarded multiple sources and rounds of funding - a very valuable debate over different projects by the same few select people are awarded, as opposed to many people involved in different projects have their projects funded. There was a consensus that the easiest, most beneficial process for funing was WEL Energy's funding process where a rep came and spent a day with us and then a few weeks later sent a letter informing us of how much funding would be deposited in our account and on what day was far far better. By actually doing our programme with us they got to see what we did and what we would most benefit from having help to achieve (a sink with running water and a clay/solvents trap). - the follow up of attending a celebration of funded mahi was where the relationships were built and on going network created. - We wonder if this type of approach could work better in rural settings and for organisations where physical limitations, literacy level and lack of administrators doing admin could deter access to this Ministry funding. A good learning process for us. Thank you!",The karakia at the start was a beautiful way to welcome us together and ser a tone for the day. Even with technical difficulties it really felt enclusive and special to Aotearoa,"Im not sure Crowdcast and Slack were the best pick for platforms - both are less common in use, so required learning from our end and the technical difficulties caused interuptions to the flow of information. Though this was very relatable! The number of larger and professional teams was intimidating, as a rural community group to find you are competing against urban, large, paid in their roles teams was the reason we decided not to send in our forms. Why would a few dozen artists win funding over a place that could win it for urban centres with bigger memberships? Equally when it is artists taking time away from their income earning/ mahi - making artworks and learning/teaching art - competing with institutions that have teams who's only focus/work is to get funding/do the admin the impetus to accumulate documents, is a major stumbling block.",
2 - Online,,No,,No,,,,The same,"Although I appreciate the effort from those who worked on the event, in the end it felt like an enormous waste of time. It would have been better to send out a document with the information and assign an hour with a Kaiāwhina to each team.",Sadly nothing. Members of our team gave up attending significant family events for this day-long online event and I don't believe they got anything worthwhile out of the day. ,Communication leading up to and during the event was insufficient. The format of the event was unclear in the lead up and during. This caused a lot of additional work and stress. E.g. it was made clear that the online event was for developed projects only and yet seed funding was constantly referred to during the online event. The workbook was not applicable to fully developed projects and should have been adjusted for the online event. The information shared in the event could have been distributed prior to the event in an email and would have saved an enormous amount of time spent watching live streams that were highly repetitive and performed poorly technically. The expert sessions were a great disappointment and it should have been communicated to us immediately that there were technical issues preventing these from being available. ,

2 - Online,,No,,No,,,,The same,"It is appalling that the Ministry could fail to such an extent as this at such a fundamental level - it speaks of poor leadership, weak management and a lack of understanding of basic business principals.","Nothing, it was an example of incredible inept production management/producing from start to finish",Employ professionals who have a grasp of delivering online live events - Wellington has numerous world leaders in this regard,
2 - Online,,No,,Yes,Lean Canvas,,,A little more,Just the frustrations of technology - and these are acknowledged,The facilitated hub session was interesting - being able to benefit from feedback on others projects as well as our own,Useful to have teams connect from one device if possible.,
2 - Online,,No,,No,,,,The same,"The process was terrible, the facilitator for Hub 3 wasnt in a quite space or able to be heard it was like she didnt know she was doing a job on that day. We have multiple meeting rooms in our coworking space housing multiple teams on the link and not 1 had a positive experience. It was a waste of time. ",It was a terrible waste of time,Test your systems and pick one fit for the event. Dont try and tech creatives to be creative Dont put people in groups to discuss ideas when they are compeitiors Dont force innovation to be the way the facilitators think it should be. We are all professionals and know what we are doing,
2 - Online,,Yes,,Yes,Shaping technology access to include all - kaumatua to rangatahi,,,A lot more,This is SUCH a better way of working - paper proposals emailing out into the faceless ether gives and gets poor understanding and relationships are not built. They are what are most important in any creative project.,The workbook which was exceedingly helpful and the approach thru te urungi concept. The chance to present in front of outsiders.,MUCH better technology. We lost so much because of the poor quality link and couldn't access people and information we needed.,
2 - Online,,Yes,,Yes,Lean Canvas,,,A little more,"Thank you. I think the in person days will be a lot more successful, both in terms of being able to meet more people / hear about more projects and building synergies regionally.",Meeting people and hearing about their projects. I'd have liked to have had the opportunity to listen more widely as I'm sure there would have been other synergies.,"Aside from the tech, the 10-minute expert sessions were too short unless you had a very specific question and even then most of the time was spent giving background so the timeframe for the expert input was extremely limited. Very tough on the experts as well - lots of wear and tear.",
2 - Online,,Yes,,No,,,,A lot more,Consider funding the establishment of an Independent NZ Arts Collective that represents and lobbies for all NZ creative industries. ,Hearing about other projects happening around Aotearoa.,It could be advantageous to group people and organisations together who share the same sector or interest to determine any crossovers that can create efficiencies / reduce double ups.,
2 - Online,,No,,No,,,,The same,"It was really confusing figuring out how to book the panel sessions. It ended up being randomly based on the order of comments in one of the digital channels, but this was not communicated to members, and there was great confusion and stress. We got a slot, thankfully, but I think there has to be a better way of organising this. ",I enjoyed being able to discuss our lean canvas with the two leaders of our 'Hub'. (it was the only discussion we were able to have). ,"A lot more communication beforehand - we had no idea what to expect, what paperwork was supposed to be completed, or what were were going to be working on on the day. The tech glitched a lot, so we could barely hear anything throughout the day, and because of that no-one in our Hub really talked to each other, just to the facilitators in our allotted sessions. The whole event structure, and its lead-up and support, really needs to be examined. ",

8 - Bay of Plenty,"Dance, multi discipline, music, theatre, other arts culture or heritage",No,,No,,No,,The same,"This workshop, pitch and written application was a massive commitment and I spent far more time than if I was to submit a written proposal. This was frustrating as it took up many unpaid hours and I am unsure whether I will receive the funding. Independent artists are already struggling trying to make ends meet and by asking for this kind of commitment just makes the industry even tougher. I was told at the beginning that MCH is trying to make processes easier and yet it was the opposite. My application was asking for a far lower amount than others I was speaking to and yet we all had to provide the same amount of information and put in the same mahi. I recommend that MCH has brackets so that people asking for less than $100k have a different process to those asking for $100k +. I was hugely disappointed that there was little representation of performing artists as experts, where were these people that could provide so much knowledge and experience? It felt like there was a huge weight of importance on the tech spacce and entrepreneurials, not artists from performing and visual arts. I was sad that I could not have any artistic conversations about my project, I was hoping to get in a good discussion with someone whether an expert or kaiawhina but it was all pitch related and how to meet the 'outcomes'. Where was the discussion of ideas? ",Working with Nicole Yee,"Having to participate in a whole weekend digital workshop was incredibly exhausting plus very hard to juggle whānau, I would highly recommend in the future splitting this up so it is easier for those that have young families or even doing it during weekdays. The hub size was great - only two of us, which meant there was enough time for the kaiwahina to contribute to both parties equally. I wish I could have had more question and answer time with the panel. Garry posed some good questions, for which I did not have the time to answer, but hopefully I can address in my prop. Whether or not our prop is successful, this pitching process felt fair, reasonable and respectful throughout. He mihi nui ki nga kaimahi o Manatu Taonga. Kia kaha tonu.","The wairua that flowed from the beginning of the hui, until the end - was something I have not felt as strongly in a Zui before - proving to me how we (funders & fundees) can successfully adapt our maori pitching processes to an on-line format while still upholding our tikanga and kawa. It laid a korowai around my shoulders that kept me warm the whole weekend. There was value in all my online interactions with the entire Manatu Taonga staff, with whom I interacted prior to the hui (Sam), and during the course of the weekend. - my three advisors each had something relevant to contribute to our roopu's proposal, and my Kaiawhina Kirsten was very capable, personable and insightful. Her clarity and questions about my prop definitely improved the manner I was able to articulate it to the panel.","I was a we bit frustrated to be so close (virtually) to so many fellow maori entrepreneurs, with no opportunity to engage with any of them, other than in my hub. I'm certain things would have been different in a kanohi ki te kanohi environment, so - as long as that remains your first pitching model, and the on-line hui format, is retained as a back up model, then I would encourage you to keep refining it.",Very supported

It was not a welcoming experience. Only Palmerston North was directly acknowledged and Manawatu-Whanganui is a very large area. I felt that neither the topic experts or the panel had appropriate expertise for the task. The panel seemed biased and unprofessional. They used valuable time in the ten minute session with them to repeat questions and ultimately criticise our ""lack of passion"". That wasn't constructive feedback and it actually did make us lose our passion. The fund should be much more explicit about what it won't fund, as it became apparent just how limiting Te Urungi was as we went further through the proceedings. We felt extremely deflated by the end of the weekend. I would like to praise our kaiawhina who was exceedingly helpful but ultimately constrained by the fund environment.
