[FYI request #18008 email]
Dear Mr McCashin
Official Information Act 1982 request – Sudden Deaths and Heart Conditions in Athletes
This letter responds to your supplementary Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) received by Sport New
Zealand on 4 February 2022. Your original request was received by Sport New Zealand on 20 December
2021 and was responded to on 8 February 2022.
You have since requesting the following clarification and information:
•
“Please provide for all sports categories as it appears this isn't limited to physical sports
and
•
I want to know if a person died of a sudden cardiac event whilst competing broken down
into amateur and professional sports”.
The request for clarification and further information asks for information which Sport NZ does not hold. To
clarify, Sport NZ does not hold any information on the number of people who have died during amateur or
professional sports games or events, nor information on their causes of death.
For this reason, Sport NZ declines your further request under section 18(g) of the Act, which states:
that the information requested is not held by the department or venture or Minister of the Crown or
organisation and the person dealing with the request has no grounds for believing that the information is
either—
(i)
held by another department (for itself and for a departmental agency hosted by it or an
interdepartmental executive board serviced by it) or interdepartmental venture or Minister of the
Crown or organisation, or by a local authority; or
(ii)
connected more closely with the functions of another department (for itself and for a
departmental agency hosted by it or an interdepartmental executive board serviced by it) or
interdepartmental venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation or of a local authority.
The Government Agency most likely to hold this information is the Ministry of Justice, whose Coronial
Services Unit may hold the information. As you are aware, your original OIA request from 20 December 2021
was partially transferred to the Ministry of Justice.
