Politics Prizes
• Prize for the Best Performance at the 300-Level by a POLS Major. Value
$500.
Criteria: This prize is for the highest average grade in four 300-level POLS papers
by a POLS major.
Explanation and clarification: There are complexities that arise when trying to
determine the winner of this prize. Please note that it is not a prize for finalists
because some students complete four 300-level papers before finishing their degree
(such as Law students). Rather, it is for students who complete their fourth 300-
level POLS paper in the year of the prize. This means that a student may have
completed three of their four papers in the year or two prior to the year in which
they are being considered for the prize.
Where students have completed more than four 300-level POLS papers, the best
four count.
In cases where the 300-level grade average is exactly the same, then a count-back
system operates with the prize being awarded to the student who has the highest
grade average in all of their POLS papers at the 100-200 levels.
Where students have completed papers as part of a foreign exchange programme,
they become ineligible for the prize. It is too difficult to fairly assess what the grade
from a foreign institution would translate into at Otago.

Unfortunately the deadline for applications by Maori students for the Summer
Scholarship is currently set in the middle of the examination period, that is, before
second semester results have been determined. We need to identify our top Maori
students as soon as possible and encourage them to apply.
