Tēnā koe Brendon,
Response to your request for official information
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to the Ministry of
Health (the Ministry) on 3 January 2022 for information relating to Te Puia Springs Hospital. You
specifically requested:
“In 1999, Te Puia Springs Hospital was transferred into iwi ownership. I would like to
obtain pdf copies of all reports, advise, correspondence, press releases etc into this
transactions, with a focus of why this was made.”
Please note, a significant volume of emails and documents have been identified to be
potentially in scope of your request. While the Ministry has considered including all documents
and correspondence, providing this response would require substantial collation or research.
This is considered ‘substantial’ as it would have a significant and unreasonable impact on the
Ministry and its ability to carry out critical operations. Due to the volume of material to be
reviewed to determine if it is in scope, it is likely that the Ministry would consider refusing the
request under section 18A. However, some documents have been able to be identified as in
scope, and in line with sections 13 and 16(1) of the Act, the Ministry is providing you these
documents related to the transfer of Te Puia Springs Hospital into iwi ownership. These
documents are itemised in Appendix 1 and copies are enclosed and are being released to you
in full.
If, after reviewing these documents, you feel your request has not been addressed, the Ministry
requests that you consider refining your request to include more information about what you are
looking for, which would allow us to further consider whether the request can be completed. For
example, it would be helpful to further understand the reason for your request or more specific
information on what you are seeking.
Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any
decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
[email address] or by calling 0800 802 602.
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry of Health website at:
