3. What is the estimated number of “surge capacity” ICU beds (fully staffed) that are planned for 2022, if
any?
Our response to your request is outlined below.
Response
1. How many fully staffed ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds are available at Hutt Hospital as of 27 January

The ICU at Hutt Hospital has 4 fully staffed beds available as at 27 January 2021.
2. What has been the bed occupancy rate (% of beds occupied) as of 27 January 2021
As of 27 January the average bed occupancy at Hutt ICU has been 55% (or 2.2 beds occupied per day).
3. What is the estimated number of “surge capacity” ICU beds (fully staffed) that are planned for 2022, if
any?
Hutt Hospital ICU has 8 physical, fully equipped ICU beds in the current unit. An additional 7 physical, fully
equipped beds are co-located in a purpose built ‘surge unit’. Therefore there are 15 physical, fully equipped
ICU beds in total.

We have a trained surge nursing workforce additional to our current ICU nursing workforce. Patient acuity,
ventilation requirements and staff availability influence the resourcing of these 15 beds at any given point in
time.
Hutt Valley District Health Board is part of the Central Regional Services of District Health Boards and as such
the ICU capacity is broader than just Hutt alone.
I trust this information fulfils your request. You have the right, under section 28 of the OIA, to seek an
investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is
