Dear A.W Farmer
Thank you for your request made under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), received
on 15 February 2021. You requested the following:
In the last financial year 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021, what was the total value of
payments made to the Ministry of Social Development in both voluntary and
compulsory payments towards student loans?
Does this significantly (+/- >5%) differ from previous years?
Student loan repayments are made to Inland Revenue, not the Ministry of Social
Development, therefore these answers reflect Inland Revenue data. The total value of
payments made for the period from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 was $1.534 billion.
Which included voluntary repayments though PAYE of $3.763 million.
The total value of repayments for the previous year was $1.398 billion. This represents an
increase from 2020 to 2021 of $136 million or 9.73%. Payments include repayments made
through the PAYE system, payments directly from borrowers both voluntary payments,
and those required to meet a repayment obligation and any transfers from other tax types.
