Dear Chuck Schooner
Official Information Act request for proportion of staff working from home
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request received on
24 February 2022. You requested:
“Can you please tell me the proportion of people in DPMC at any one time at the
moment.
For example - just estimates will be fine 80% working from home 20% office
Or whatever the proportion is.”
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) recently did a working from
home survey which was completed by approximately 69% of staff. It found that around two
thirds of DPMC employees did at least some work from home in the previous week, with
around 1 in 10 working entirely from home. A third of all staff were working fully from the
office.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which is a departmental agency
hosted by DPMC, carried out the same survey. Approximately 75% of NEMA staff completed
the survey which found that the majority of NEMA employees did at least some work from
home in the previous week, with around 1 in 3 working entirely from home. A small
proportion of staff were working fully from the office (1 in 20).
It is important to note that the study was not completed by all staff and was based on data
which only covered a period of seven days. At the time the study was undertaken, the results
were also influenced by a number of factors including that a number of staff were working
from home due to the Omicron outbreak, and the end of the summer holiday period,
including the Waitangi Day public holiday. It is however the most accurate snapshot we have
of our working from home habits.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
