[FYI request #18516 email]
Dear Joshua
Information Request
I refer to your correspondence of 10 February 2022 in which you requested
information relating to the New Zealand Police vehicle fleet.
You requested:
•
A list of all police vehicles registrations, make/models and operational
use.
•
Amount of vehicles operated strictly by the Armed Offender Squad.
•
Amount of vehicles with marked liveries.
•
Amount of vehicles unmarked with police liveries.
•
Amount of Booze Buses and Paddy Wagons nationwide.
•
Amount of Delta/Dog specific vehicles.
•
Total amount of Police Vehicles in operation.
•
With each of these please include their operational base/station (E.g. -
Counties Manukau)
I have considered your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
Information in response to each part of your request can be found in the attached
appendix.
This information was sourced from the Master Fleet Register, which is subject to
change daily. This can be for several reasons, such as a vehicle has reached the
end of its service and decommissioned, replaced by a new vehicle, or transferred
to a different working group.
All vehicle models used by Police as of 21 January 2022 are represented in the
appendix.

The allocation of resources to specialised working groups is operationally
sensitive and must be remain confidential to uphold the maintenance of law. For
this reason, the information you requested for registration numbers and the
number of vehicles assigned to the Armed Of enders Squad (AOS) have been
withheld under section 6(c) of the OIA as making that information available is
likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law. I have supplied the total number of
vehicles assigned to the specialised working groups, including AOS but not to
such a granular level where it compromises the confidentiality of those working
groups.
The New Zealand Police vehicle fleet currently has 1985 marked vehicles and
995 unmarked vehicles within its fleet, listed in the attached appendix and correct
as at 21 January 2022. This is not the total number of vehicles within the fleet,
due in part to the type of vehicle and its operation requirement. (See at ached
appendix for more detail.)
Inclusion of the ‘operational base/station’ is refused pursuant to section 18(f) of
the OIA as the information requested cannot be made available without
substantial collation or research. By way of explanation, the vehicle appendix
(provided) was taken from the master vehicle list which is a live document; it
changes daily and would be very difficult to give an accurate location of vehicles
as vehicles are transferred from district to district if required, and if a vehicle is
decommissioned or writ en off the list is updated to reflect this too.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to ask the Ombudsman to
review my decision if you are not satisfied with the way I have responded to your
request.
Your sincerely
Inspector Brian Yanko
Manager: Fleet Service Group
New Zealand Police
