Scholarships Offered by the University of Otago Faculty of Law, 2022

Sir Harold Barrowclough Scholarship in Law - Application required
Established in 1972 under the wil of Sir Harold Barrowclough who bequeathed the sum of $2000 to
the University of Otago to establish scholarships for students of the Faculty of Law. The amount of
the prize may vary from year to year, but is usually in the range $1000 - $2000.
1. The scholarship may be awarded only to students who are, or have been, students of the
Faculty of Law of the University of Otago and who, having completed their LLB degree, are
proceeding to a higher degree in New Zealand or overseas.
2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a
selection committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of the Faculty of Law or
their nominees. If they are unable to agree on any matter, it shall be referred to an enlarged
Committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of the Faculty of Law and the
President of the Otago District Law Society or their nominees.
3. The Council of the University may fix or vary the amount to be paid annually to the scholar.
4. Unless otherwise decided by the University, the scholarship shal be tenable for one year,
but on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, may be extended to two or three
years.

Clarrie Stevens Memorial Scholarship – Application required
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist meritorious senior undergraduate law students to
complete their courses of study at the University of Otago. The Scholarship is to be awarded
to students in their final year of study for a Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws with
Honours. Preference will be given to candidates in financial need who have demonstrated
special ability in the areas of Wills and Trusts or Commercial Law papers.
The amount of the scholarship is usual y around $5,000. A panel of local practitioners and a
representative from the Otago Law Faculty will consider the applications and make a
recommendation to the son of Clarrie Stevens. The panel may propose not to award a scholarship in
any particular year. In the case of a number of deserving candidates, the scholarship may be shared.
An application form must be completed in ful by the applicant and emailed with supporting
documents (academic transcript and CV) to [email address] or lodged with the Faculty of
Law Reception. 2022 application closing date TBC, usually around October.
Jolene Patuawa Tuilave Scholarship – Application required
Established by the University of Otago Council in 2013 in remembrance of Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave, a
promising University of Otago graduate treasured by both colleagues and whanaunga in her short
professional career. The contributions towards this scholarship serve as a testament to her lifetime
that became her legacy upon her passing in June 2010.
Eligibility
Applications are open to University of Otago Māori students studying ful -time towards the final year
of a double degree, which includes a Bachelor of Laws.
Application Process
Every applicant must submit an application to the University of Otago Doctoral and Scholarships
Office on the prescribed form by the specified closing date, including:
• A 250 word statement addressing how they fit the selection criteria outlined below
• A brief Curriculum Vitae.
Selection Process
An awarding committee consisting of the Dean, Faculty of Law (or nominee), the Associate Dean,
Māori, Division of Humanities (or nominee), and the Director of the Office of Māori Development (or
nominee), in consultation with a representative of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua, shall consider the
following factors in recommending the award of the scholarship:
• Academic ability
• Leadership qualities
• A demonstrated passion for and involvement in Te Ao Māori/Mātauranga Māori
• Mentorship, demonstrating the principles of ako and tuakana:teina
• Whanaungatanga (good relationships with others) and Manaakitanga (concern for others)
Should all other things be equal amongst shortlisted applicants, preference will be given to students
of Ngāti Whātua Descent.
University of Otago Scholarships, Prestige and Named Prestige Scholarships (awarded for
300-Level academic achievement) – By nomination only
The University of Otago Prestige Scholarships and University of Otago Scholarships are awarded by
the University Council on the basis of high academic achievement, to students who are completing
either the third year of a specific degree programme (Bachelor’s degrees in Applied Science,
Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Surveying, Physical Education or Physiotherapy), or completing
the 300-level Major subject requirement of other degree or Diploma programmes. University of
Otago Prestige Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students and the University of Otago
Scholarships are awarded to excellent students.
To be eligible to receive the remuneration of the Scholarship, a student to who an award has been
made must be enrolled at the University of Otago in the following year in a full-time course at 400-
level or 500-level towards a degree or postgraduate diploma in the same discipline for which the
award was made.
