Official Information Act Reference:
Thank you for your email of 7 April 2022, in which you requested official information from
Archives New Zealand. Under the Official Information Act 1982, you requested:
• A copy of the Archway database for the full inventory of Archives records.
• You requested the ‘R’ Number, Title, Years, Item ID, Agency, Series, Accession,
Record group, Box / Item, Sep Record no., Part Alternative no., Record type and
Former archives ref of all records listed.
I am denying your request under section 18(d) and section 18(f) of the Official Information
Act 1982.
While your request is duly particular, the information requested cannot be made available
without substantial collation or research. Archives New Zealand does not have the resources
or administrative capacity to supply the information that you have requested. The enormity
of the database of Archway is a considerable barrier as Archives New Zealand holds over
seven million records. In addition, the individual records held in the Archway database are
publicly available via the Collections Search function, although not in the format you have
requested.
Please note that the Archway database has not been updated since December 2021. The
continual work Archives New Zealand does to provide access to records means the
information in the Archway database is now out of date and no longer a reliable source for
records held by Archives New Zealand.
You have the right under section 28 of the OIA to seek an investigation and review by the
Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint can be found at
