Kia ora Rebecca,
The information you requested - CAS-550753-N0G0L6
Thank you for your request for information dated 4 May 2022for Auckland Transport (AT) requesting
information about the design of new bike stand in Te Komititanga.
Design process:
This bike stand was designed in collaboration with oOH Media, AT’s street furniture partner. It was
leveraging the success from their deployment of this infrastructure in Wellington. We have also
seen this design delivered successfully in Nelson. We took learnings from the first install at Aotea
Square to continue deploying. The value this infrastructure brings is maximising space to deliver
more capacity and weather protection for bikes. We have also continued to discuss the Bike
Shelter’s with Bike Auckland who have been hugely supportive of the initiative and have contributed
to suggesting desired sites.
Design standards:
The unit installed is similar to other street furniture deployed across Auckland. In an attempt to
better integrate the shelter into Te Komitianga Plaza we installed supported the installation of green
walls. This impact on pedestrian sightlines and so the green walls were removed.
End-user, stakeholder needs:
We considered greater capacity, decluttering footpaths, weather protection as the primary needs for
users and stakeholders. This space was initially set aside for a food and beverage kiosks and it was
deemed more useful for the community and businesses to provide a great number of bike parking
spaces to support greater access.
Research into bike stand hardware: This is something that AT and cycling groups need to continually look at. We have a regular dialogue
with Bike Auckland around Bike Parking specifically which has been hugely insightful. Aside from
location, we have been advised that weather protection, accessibility (ease of use), passive security
and the ability to securely lock your bike are the key influences regarding good design.
Further, where shelters such as these are not suitable Sheffield stands are widely viewed as the best
alternative. We are also looking at secure ebike Charging units with industry partners currently.
Funding:
The installation of the shelter was funded by AT. ATs street furniture partner through existing
contracts will cover all ongoing maintenance and cleaning costs.
