Response to your request for official information Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to the Ministry of
Health (the Ministry) on 13 May 2022. You requested:
- A CSV file of the Covid-19 Daily Hosptalisation Statistics broken down by Vaccination
Status from when this data first started being recorded.
- Is the Hospitalisation Statistics available for the whole of New Zealand, or only for the
Northern Region? If so, who would hold this information?
I have identified two documents within scope of your request. These documents are itemised in
Appendix 1 and copies of the document are enclosed.
Please note that in line with Statistics New Zealand recommendations, all data that is not
currently released on the website as an exact count will be released after perturbation using
fixed random rounding to base 3 (FRR3) – with the following additions:
1. Zero values are preserved
a. Except for in sensitive categories where a zero value may be suppressed to
protect other low values.
2. Values between one and five will be suppressed.
3. Counts, including suppressed values, will not be provided when a grouping within the
data is small enough that there is only a single value of a sensitive category: e.g.
vaccination status, cause of death, or ethnicity.
Further information is available her
e: www.data.govt.nz/toolkit/privacy-and-
security/understanding-data-confidentiality/data-confidentiality-principles-and-methods-report/. Additionally, please note that hospitalisations of people under 20 years of age have been
excluded from the documents, due to the much lower hospitalisation risk in that group.
Previously we only had reliable individual-level hospitalisation information for patients in the
Northern Region. However, we can now provide more robust figures for all of New Zealand.
The figures provided in this response are for all of New Zealand. If this is not the information you
are seeking – you may wish to make another request for Official Information and specify which
region you are seeking data for.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any
decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
[email address] or by calling 0800 802 602.
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at:

information-act-requests.
