Dear Andrew
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 23 May 2022 requesting the fol owing information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I would like the location coordinates of the three cameras involved in the trial described in this
press release.
I would also like to know the make and model of the cameras in the trial.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is trial ing the safety cameras to get a better understanding of how
many people drive while using their mobile phones and don’t wear their seatbelts. Waka Kotahi wil
also assess the suitability of using the camera images for enforcement purposes. The locations have
not been publicly disclosed in order to ensure people don’t alter their behaviour as a result of the
cameras, as this wil affect the accuracy of the trial results.
I am refusing the location information under section 6(c) of the Act which provides for refusal when the
information is likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the prevention, investigation,
and detection of offences, and the right to a fair trial.
The cameras used in this trial are supplied by an Australian company called Acusensus. The specific
cameras used for this trial are known as the Acusensus Heads Up Solution.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to refuse
part of your request. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
If you would like to discuss this reply with Waka Kotahi, please contact Official Correspondence by
email to [NZTA request email].
Yours sincerely
Neil Cook
Deputy Director of Land Transport
