Dear Oscar
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 24 May 2022 requesting the fol owing information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
The "secret location" of al the mobile phone detection cameras.
The dates/period of the trial.
Total cost for the phone detection cameras.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is trial ing the safety cameras to get a better understanding of how
many people drive while using their mobile phones and don’t wear their seatbelts. Waka Kotahi wil
also assess the suitability of using the camera images for enforcement purposes. The locations have
not been publicly disclosed in order to ensure people don’t alter their behaviour as a result of the
cameras, as this wil affect the accuracy of the trial results.
I am refusing the location information under section 6(c) of the Act which provides for refusal when the
information is likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the prevention, investigation,
and detection of offences, and the right to a fair trial.
The trial began on 24 May 2022 and wil last for 6 months. The total cost of the trial is expected to be
roughly $380,000. This figure includes the cost of the camera technology, installation, and operation.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to refuse
part of your request. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
If you would like to discuss this reply with Waka Kotahi, please contact the Ministerial Services team
by email to [NZTA request email].
Yours sincerely
Neil Cook
