Dear T. Ho
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email
of 24 May 2022 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I would like to know the details for the years 2016 - 2021;
How many people had to reissue their license due to having the condition of "correcting lenses
no longer required when driving"?
How old were these people?
How much were these people charged as stipulated on the DL2 form?
The condition of “correcting lenses no longer required when driving” does not exist in the Driver
Licence Register. However, the driver licence condition “Correcting lenses must be used while driving”
is recoded against the driver’s licence when a driver licence application is granted with the applicant
either passing the eyesight test at a driver licensing agent with correcting lenses, or the applicant
presenting a medical or eyesight certificate confirming they are fit to drive with correcting lenses.
Therefore, your request for how many people had to reissue their license due to having the condition
of "correcting lenses no longer required when driving” broken down by age has been interpreted as:
The number of applicants granted a replacement application between 2016-2021 calendar
years where the condition "Correcting lenses must be used while driving" was cancelled. Data
to be provided by year and age group of applicant at application grant date.
The information you have requested is being provided to you in the table over the page.

It is important to note:
• The information was extracted from the Driver Licence Register (DLR) and is current as at 21
June 2022.
• The data is limited to applicants who were granted a replacement application between 1
January 2016-31 December 2021 (inclusive) where the condition "Correcting lenses must be
used while driving" (also known as the "B" condition) was cancelled on the same day as the
grant date of the replacement application.
• Age group of applicant is calculated at application grant date.
• The data is a distinct count of applicants by age group and year (year replacement application
granted). An applicant may be included in more than one count if:
o multiple replacement applications were granted where the B condition was cancelled,
and
o the applications were granted in more than one calendar year, and/or
o the applicant belonged to more than one age group for each application.
• If a licence holder is no longer required to wear correcting lenses to drive, the licence holder is
required to apply for a replacement and either pass an eye check at the agent (without
correcting lenses) or provide a medical or eyesight certificate with confirmation that their
current eyesight result is 'fit without lenses' for the respective classes. This can also be
completed as part of other application types including a driver licence renewal, or when
applying for a new class or stage of licence, etc.
Regarding how much people were charged as stipulated on the DL2 form, it states that the fee for
issuing a replacement photo driver license is $38.20 and replacement driver ID card fee is $13.70.
This price has been the same since 2015. The reissuing of a license when a licence holder no longer
requires correcting lenses to drive means that the license holder will also have to pay this fee.
In line with Waka Kotahi policy, this response will soon be published on our website, with personal
information removed.
